If true, it's a good thing. Although I don't believe it will change anything.

So I guess Bush was right when he said 10 years ago "We'll get bin Laden".

A few thoughts while I was in the shower...

a) I'm glad he's dead.
b) I'm glad Americans got him. Fair is fair.
c) I hope those on the operation keep quiet about their participation for their own safety, although I'm guessing it will remain classified.
d) What will they do with the body? Interment at Guantanamo would be appropriate.
e) Will they release photos of the body? I'm guessing they will pretty soon, i.e., before the conspiracy theories begin.
f) I like this.
g) Obama should have flown out to an aircraft carrier somewhere and made the announcement with a "Mission Accomplished" banner in the background.

I'm glad, too, Sean, though I don't care as much WHO got him but that he was got. I'm fairly certain Navy SEALS live by the "no discussion, no repercussion" rule. There is massive celebration in New York City at ground zero with this. There are reports on CNN that a burial at sea was done, but no confirmation of that, but really, if they don't dispose of him quickly, there is the risk of martyrdom that needs to be removed. I liked your link, but I sent this link to my 13 year old great-godson, since he's all about Chuck Norris jokes.

While everyone is being so pleased at this news, I can't help thinking that it might have been better to take him alive and put him on trial instead of killing him. Okay, so I'm a pacifist and against the death penalty, so that's just me. But I wonder if the repercussions of this killing won't be worse than having captured him. He's a martyr now to his followers and they'll find another leader who will use this killing as a weapon to stir up more violence. Had he been put on trial, his followers might have seen what a sorry ass coward he actually was and it could have done more to diffuse many future terrorist activities.

I found out on Facebook and then verified on Wikipedia, obviously. Two major institutions which didn't exist when this manhunt began.

I was absolutely astonished that he had still been alive. I'd assumed for years that he likely died anonymously in the early operations. Impressive that he could evade everyone for so long.

It's better that he's dead than on the loose, but I agree with C.L. that they should have captured him if at all possible. They really don't seem to have tried to do so at all. Apparently, Pakistan has just recently asked the C.I.A. to stop operations there because of the number of extrajudicial killings, but of course they didn't deign to get Pakistan's permission. At least Saddam Hussein went before a kangaroo court.

In particular, given the huge number of known innocents swept up, taken to Guantanamo Bay and kept for years because they might provide some 'intelligence' (by virtue of, for example, being a taxi driver in a relevant area), it's unfathomable that it wouldn't be worth trying to get some intelligence out of bin Laden.

I admit I had the same thought. There'd be something good about him being brought down to earth in the eyes of his followers when they see him on TV in an orange jumpsuit.

The conspiracist in me is wondering if perhaps he killed himself? He died from a bullet wound to the head. I can't really see him allowing himself to be taken alive if he had the choice.

"Known innocents"?

1. Had this been merely an assassination, the military would have used any one of a number of precision bombing systems readily available and previously demonstrated. The use of a small team indicates a clear effort to capture.

2. While Ian gushes with admiration over one terrorist's evasiveness, and attacks the U.S with a charge of being guilty of subjugating a "huge number" of "known innocents" in the effort to combat anti-western terrorists, he has not identified any by name, nor has he proposed a number, huge or otherwise.

While he regroups in his effort to defend and extol the virtues of civil rights for terrorists, militant combatants and taxi drivers, scroll down this list of actual innocents; they died on September 11, 2001 (two of whom were the parents of a very good friend of mine):

To MguyX--excellent message, and forceful demonstration. Reminded me of my visit to the Vietnam memorial in Washington, DC. The reality of the numbers comes home when you see the names.

I think lighting candles and resolving to build a world where terrorism is obsolete is a more appropriate reaction than dancing in the streets.

ChocolateLady, I too wish he'd been taken alive. I'm with MguyX in thinking that the operation was geared toward live capture if possible. I imagine they did the best they could.

I'm really worried about the next couple of months and beyond. Reprisals--new flames fanned--martyrdom affirmed--recruitment--this is no time to be crowing "Mission Accomplished." We often mistake the symptoms of Terrorism for the disease. I am grateful that President Obama is taking pains to assert that the US is not at war with Islam.

If he had been taken alive, there'd have been a trial - and what a media circus that would have been, then the burden of proof that he commited or directly commisioned any act of terrorism. We know he did, but proove it in a court of law?
Precision bombing has failed to get Gaddafi on at least 3 occasions, a bullet to the head is so much more precise. The added benefit is that you can then remove the body/ tissue samples for genetic verification of the target.
Also, now we're bracing for a revenge attack, but if he were still alive in prison, how many attacks/ threatened attacks/ hostage takings would we be subjected to until he finally died of old age in prison - at which time we'd still get the revenge attack.

All in all, a good job, well done.

I firmly believe he is dead. bin Laden had an uncanny way of releasing photos and videotapes that served to further his path all along. When time fails to come up with a new release, then that will confirm it. Meanwhile, where is the outcry about having a wife as a bullet shield?? Talk about the concept of chattel - let's take my number 5 wife and use her as a bulletproof vest!

I think that's because that's been subsequently confirmed to be fiction, along with him supposedly firing at the soldiers. He was unarmed*, and his wife rushed a soldier and she was then shot in the leg.

I'd call it an execution, although that doesn't bother me particularly - if he was pursued as a criminal then his guilt is beyond question as is the fact he's committed capital offenses in numerous jurisdictions so he's been convicted and executed; and if it was war, well fine, he was shot during combat (call that a surgical decapitation of his 'army'). I would actually have preferred him to have spent the rest of his life in prison, that would actually be a punishment unlike a quick bullet to the head. Having said that there's a lot to be said for it being all over and done with quickly. Catharsis etc...

It doesn't look like there was any serious attempt to take him alive. Whatever... There are 7 billion people on earth and he was one too many.

*That's one thing I can't get my head around. Why did he not have a gun? Surely if he wasn't planning on being taken alive then he'd have gone down firing? Or why no underground bunker or panic room? Or perhaps he was planning on being taken alive (I'm sure he'd have liked the huge global audience from a televised US courtroom), but that's not consistent with the apparent resistance by his guards. I don't geddit.

I tend to think it's a complacency thing. With those high walls around the house, it was fairly well secluded and perhaps he just wasn't that much on his guard since he reportedly has lived there for quite a while. In this case, familiarity didn't breed contempt, it bred carelessness. Oh, gee. What a shame.

Trust MguyX to get melodramatic and conveniently select which part of my post he quoted. If he cares to re-read it, he may bother to notice that I prominently stated that it is better that he is dead than free. That doesn't mean that no other option would have been better.

There have been lots of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay that the United States has explicitly admitted were innocent while they were in custody and they were only being held because of their potential intelligence value. They included people who were minors when captured and senile old men. If MguyX can't be bothered to believe those facts then I can't be bothered to convince him. I was quite clear in my post that the main reason they should have at least tried to take him alive was because of his much greater intelligence value. If no one made any attempt to question him then in comparison there is really no point ever capturing any terrorist, let alone innocent people from a targeted region.

And shame on MguyX for listing those victims' names as a way of having a cheap dig at me. Shame on him. If I could list all the victims of the Holocaust it wouldn't for a single second mean that the Nuremberg trials should not have taken place.

You're a self-righteous idiot, Ian, who opens his mouth without thinking, and never with regard to whom you might offend. Everyone hates you and wants you to leave.

Unfortunately, YOU were not on the scene when bin Laden was approached, hence YOU have no fucking idea what happened there, though you spout off as if you are an authority. (But, oh how I wish you had been there, to regale Team Six with your anti-Gitmo arguments ....) While most tempered even their aversion to the death of the weasel, you seized upon boorishness, criticizing the U.S. force that was on the scene based on assumptions you imply as established fact. Unlike me, YOU were never in the military and have NO idea how to read military strategy, hence your continued adherence to the ignorant assumption that there was no effort to capture the West's most wanted murderer. Though, frankly, YOUR assessment of his intelligence value is nil, since you struggle with stringing together either logical or objective observations.

Your complete disregard for the sensibilities of the survivors, victims, their families AND TWO PEOPLE WHOM I KNEW stands, once again, as a testament to your abject tactlessness. Cheap dig? No, motherfucker: sobering reminder that feckless, inartful turds such as you need to keep your ill-informed fatuity to yourself.

Your invocation of the Holocaust is offensive; I wish I could cut off your fingers for typing it. The example runs far afield: unlike you and your salute to bin Laden, I never extolled the caginess or intelligence of Hitler, nor would I sully the memory of those slaughtered millions with complaints about the actions of Mossad or any number of righteous Nazi hunters in bringing those guilty fucks to justice, whether instant or judicial.

Coward. Again you fail to back up your assertion with reference to a credible source, announcing that the mere statement by yourself should be authority enough. You cannot be bothered because you cannot do it. You can't do it because you cannot prove the complete innocence or, alternately, absence of intelligence value of people you do not know, who came from a hostile situation you could not even accurately imagine. Minors and the elderly cannot form the intent to kill? An innocent man and a guilty man largely have one thing in common: they both profess innocence. The search for truth is a process, not a blithe assumption that kids and over 65 eat free. But I would wager a hefty sum that U.S. forces have not intended as a matter of course or policy to capture and detain a "known innocent."

Bad example; the Gitmo trials are in progress, so the U.S., by analogy, continues to exercise an adherence to the classic tradition of justice and trial by jury. However, if you could make that list, right about the time you got to around 3,000, most non-bigoted people would probably start to feel that a trial seems like a lot of fuss for a guy who boasts about how he happily perpetrated the murder of millions.

Do us a favor: next time you go out of the country to teach English, do it in Yemen, or Somalia.

Even though we both speak the same language, it's amazing how there are some subtle differences between American-English and proper English:

They say "sidewalk" we say "pavement"

They say "pants" we say "trousers"

They say "buried at sea" we say "naked and chained to a metal bed frame with a car battery connected to his bollocks whilst being beaten for answers".

The Dalai Lama: on the justification of killing bin Laden

Interesting. I see that the title of the page is actually 'A Symbol Of Compassion, Dalai Lama Hints Bin Laden's Killing Was Justified'. I don't think you can lose the word 'hints' once you read what he actually said (see below).

It's a matter of interpretation I suppose (dangerous when you're dealing with religions, I know) but having just read his comments I took them to say that a compassionate action was what was required, even though you can't forget what he's done. To be frank, I can't see where he even hints that the actions were justified, so I think both the page title and your link title are more than a little misleading.

His Holiness then answered questions, some of which were submitted through the Internet. The first question was on His Holiness emphasis on compassion as a basis of ethics. It asked whether in some situation ensuring justice is more important than being compassionate to the perpetrator of a crime. It referred to the news of the death of Osama Bin Laden and the celebrations of it by some, and asked where compassion fit in with this and ethics. In his response, His Holiness emphasized the need to find a distinction between the action and the actor. He said in the case of Bin Laden, his action was of course destructive and the September 11 events killed thousands of people. So his action must be brought to justice, His Holiness said. But with the actor we must have compassion and a sense of concern, he added. His Holiness said therefore the counter measure, no matter what form it takes, has to be compassionate action. His Holiness referred to the basis of the practice of forgiveness saying that it, however, did not mean that one should forget what has been done.

Misleading? Not in the slightest: you are completely ignoring the early portion of the article that contains the direct quote. Rather, you quote the "later" remarks provided by the Dalai Lama's staff, apparently trying to qualify the direct quote His Holiness made earlier, which the article reproduces verbatim,

As a human being, Bin Laden may have deserved compassion and even forgiveness, the Dalai Lama said in answer to a question about the assassination of the Al Qaeda leader. But, he said, "Forgiveness doesn't mean forget what happened. ... If something is serious and it is necessary to take counter-measures, you have to take counter-measures."

Do you see it now?

Yes, sorry, I clicked on the more detailed link to find the context, but it does report it slightly differently. I still think that the suggestion of what he was 'hinting' is down to interpretation. When I read that verbatim quote, I don't see an endorsement of the specific actions taken, rather that serious actions sometimes require serious counter-measures. He's deliberately vague and non-inflammatory beacuse he has to be in his position.

I'm not sure that a spiritual opinion is particularly helpful anyway (I'm sure I could find 20 bible quotes that support/reject the killing of bin Laden). I'm a pacifist, so I find any killing repugnant, but I would like to understand what actually happened and whether the killing of OBL was necessary. I find that Chomsky generally cuts to the heart of any matter without being swayed by any kind of popular opinion or politics. In this case he seems pretty damning but I'd like to hear your view.

Thank you for your comments, BB. I apologize for the vehemence that lingers behind my observations, as I do not want to be rude or unkind to you. Again, I apologize.

This subject has been very touchy to me because I knew two people who were killed during the September 11 attack. I don't mean to denigrate the view that "OBL" (nice touch, by the way) should have been captured alive if possible, as I would like that to have been the end result as well; but I have no anger that OBL's end came more quickly.

I understand Chomsky's viewpoint, although I disagree with portions of it. While I am no fan of the political legacy of GWB, I do not think the killing of OBL can be equated with an hypothetical killing of GBW (though the argument would be more effective if he had compared the attempt to assassinate Ghaddafi with an effort to assassinate Obama, which I think is a lot harder to "justify" and looks a lot like repetition of the ill-founded basis for invading Iraq).

No, I completely appreciate where you're coming from dude and there's no doubt that this is an emotive subject, no matter how detached and reasoned one tries to be. My sense of unease comes from the (now inevitable) obfuscation that surrounds the reporting of all of these events. I'm sure the truth will never be known - or given credence certainly - because the machine won't allow it. My main worry is that most of the major global events of the last decade, and most probably long before, are merely a sideshow for what is actually happening, and by the time most people wake up to it, it will be too late to do anything about it.

This symbolic act was always going to divide opinion, but where it was once the final destination, it has now morphed into a mere interlude on some other, greater, unknown journey.

I'll leave you with three quotes that spring to mind:

"It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets." - Voltaire

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured? - Nietzsche

"History is a set of lies agreed upon" - Napoleon Bonaparte

Here were the options for BHO (the way I see it), and my score out of 10 for each option:-

a) Leave OBL where he was. 0
b) Give the Pakistani authorities his location and hope they weren't on his side. 3
c) Carpet bomb the compound hoping he was there and kill everyone in it - kids included - and hope he can be identified from the remains. 4
d) Send in a hit squad to pop his cork. 9
e) Send in a squad to capture him, take him to Gitmo and keep him there for ever. 0 - (that place shouldn't exist)
f) Send in a squad to capture him, take him to the USA and try him for murder, find him guilty, post photos of him in an orange jumpsuit for all to see, them imprison him for life next to Charles Manson. 10
g) Send in a squad to capture him, take him to the USA and try him for murder, find him not guilty (quite likely, we all know he's guilty but where's the evidence that will be sufficient for conviction?) then release him. 0
h) Send in a squad to capture him, take him to the USA and try him for murder, find him not guilty, then let him out the front door of the court to be lynched by the masses. 2
i) Send him to Yemen, Kenya or Tanzania and hope they are able to hold him, try him, and have him found guilty and dealt with. 3

The more I think about it the more I see that d) was the only sensible option and the one that I would have felt I had little choice but to take if it was mine to take; this is also the option I believe was actually taken. OBL being found not guilty would set the worst example possible to any budding democracies in the Middle East (or elsewhere); i.e., you might as well tell them that fair judicial systems don't work so they're better off establishing guilt with show trials or Presidential decree.

The DNA result for Osama Bin Laden has come back as 46% coconut, 29% cocoa, 19% sugar and 6% milk solids. An expert says this is probably due to the fact that he had a bounty on his head.

well on that note ...

I auditioned for Britain's Got Talent when it visited Newbury. But, shockingly, I was turned down.
That's right, my signature 'balancing a Mars Bar on my head for ten minutes' failed to impress Simon Cowell.
He said, "Sorry, but Osama Bin Laden's had a Bounty on his head for eight years."

We had Bounty bars available in California when I was a teen and into my 20s (when I slowly began to lose my attraction to candy bars). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bounty_ chocolate_bar This article also notes their (apparently) limited availability in the U.S., but I think it was more available than the author(s) know. And the limited edition Mango version was avaialable here too!
