Its that time of year again. These are my favorite films that I saw in 2015:
1. La La Land - Crisp editing and brilliant cinematography make this highly entertaining and romantic musical stand out.
2. The Jungle Book - Jon Favreau and his team created a visual effects masterpiece that is incredibly sweet, moving, and had characters and a story that really engaged me.
3. Sully ("Silly-billies bully Sully.") - Tom Hanks gives a wonderful performance as the titular hero. The rest of the cast is fantastic as well.
4. Arrival ("Close Inkounters.") - Structurally, the screenplay is a slight-of-hand sci fi pot boiler, but thematically, it is a prayer for peace. It works very well on both levels. Credit goes to the director, Denis Villeneuve, his editor, Joe Walker, and the screenwriter, Eric Heisserer, for crafting a film that intrigued me, but never confused me, and left me wanting to talk about it afterwards.
5. Zootopia ("Dirty Hare.") - This film is as thematically complex as Arrival and still manages to be funny and action-packed. It is always thrilling to watch character animation of this caliber (watch the acting in Hopps's face when she apologizes or when she is offended).
6. 13th - I probably have read more books and seen more films about African American history than most white men, but this Netflix documentary by Ava DuVernay really opened my eyes to worlds and words I haven't fully considered. I am still not certain about what I as an individual can do to repair the broken system the movie depicts, but like all great political films, this one planted a seed in my spirit.
I have not yet seen 20th Century Woman, Captain Fantastic, Fences, Hidden Figures, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Jackie, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, Patriot's Day, or Silence. If I see any of them and think they are deserving, I'll amend the list.
