Okay folks, just an update on the server crash yesterday...

Best as I can tell the site is now back working fully and no data was lost. I've also backed everything up should this happen again (and not be recoverable) in the next day or so.

Obviously, this has knocked my confidence in this server's reliability somewhat and that in combination with my desire to upgrade FWFR's server for some time now has pushed me to finally do something about it. As a result, I'll be switching to another server this weekend so there might (and by *might*, I mean *will*) be some server downtime, more likely hours than minutes due to the amount of data I'll be transferring across. I'll keep you all posted via the FWFR Facebook page.

The other thing this incident tells me is that my backups simply aren't good enough. There's just too much data now for me to feasibly back up and download it every day. Instead, I'll be getting the server backed up by the web host. This is all techie stuff I'm sure you're bored by but the basic gist of it is: should this happen again (and I'm sure it will), the site will be fully recoverable (unlike for a brief period of time yesterday) and not dependent on me having remembered to back everything up recently.

The other positive of the server move of course is that the site should be somewhat quicker since the current server is over four years old- an eternity in tech. So, apologies for what could be a disruptive weekend for site regulars, but it'll be worth it in the end

OK it just happened again right then, trying to load this page

http://www.fwfr.com/film/?FID=2383

when I tried again the page loaded fine.

Edit: And again, this time on MyFwfr page. OK on refresh.

I've just turned on more detailed error messages. Can you let me know what the full error message is when this next happens?

I just got

"Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a0046'

Permission denied

/includes/db.asp, line 36 "

trying to open

http://www.fwfr.com/user/accolades/

It's just text on white background, unlike the previous error messages which had html (or something).

Excellent- just what I needed. Should be fixed now.

Edit: just got exactly the same message, but here it is just to make sure

Permission denied

/includes/db.asp, line 36 "

on this page

http://www.fwfr.com/film/?FID=2383

I've been trying to provoke it though, opening plenty of pages etc.

It could have been your fiddling. It hasn't happened in the last 10h or so. I'll let you know if it happens again.

I've been getting this a fair bit since the server change. Haven't seen it on the fourum though, just the main site (MyFwfr, movie pages etc).

Me too.

Are you still getting it happen? I was doing some work on the site last night which would have caused this- just want to discount it as being simply down to my fiddling.

I see the same- blank first post from benj but visible if replying

Something weird is going on. The first post in every thread is showing as blank, yet the contents of the post are visible when replying to the thread. Not sure if this has something to do with the upgrade or not.

BTW I just cleared my cache, no change. W7 and Firefox 10.0.2.

Strange- will investigate. The good news though, is that I've checked in the database and the first posts still seem to be there at least- they're just not being written out for some odd reason
