In a way, this is like nearly every book ever written by Stephen King. I admit I'm a fan of his books, have been ever since he started publishing. Since they tend to be released just prior to Christmas (terrific marketing), I've always gotten the latest as a gift and would pour over it immediately. Some of them were disappointing, some were marvelous horror books.

The trouble has been that the majority of them did not translate into great films.

Some sucked: The Lawnmower Man, The Night Flier, The Langoliers, Tommyknockers, Thinner.

Some were disappointing: Christine, Pet Sematary, Sometimes They Come Back, The Dark Half, Dreamcatcher.

Some films were perfectly acceptable if one didn't try to compare them to the book: The Shining, Cujo, Maximum Overdrive, It, Needful Things, Hearts in Atlantis,

Some were decent enough films: Creepshow, the first 'Salem's Lot, The Dead Zone, Children of the Corn (just the original one), Firestarter, Silver Bullet, The Running Man, The Stand, Apt Pupil, Secret Window.

A very few were terrific films: Carrie (original), Stand by Me, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, Doloris Claiborne, The Green Mile.

Interesting is that four of the six I categorized as terrific also produced at least an Oscar nomination for a star. Bates won for Misery and Morgan Freeman should have won for Shawshank (with apologies to Tom Hanks).

P.S. John Grisham books often fall into this category

I wasn't disappointed with it. It's a mediocre book that's an enjoyable enough romp, though with unbelievably prosaic prose. I thought that the film did as good a job as were possible.

Your comment made me smile, Salop. That book was just mediocre. So, therefore, the movie didn't have much chance of being much better. There was so much talk and hype about that book. Finally I read it and I thought, "It was okay." I guessed most of the puzzles before the main characters did(who were portrayed as experts and therefore smarter than I am.) It was kind of pitiful and expected.
I didn't expect much of the movie after I finally read the book.

EM :)

You know, this happens so much. Remember Bridges of Madison County? Everyone went crazy for the book, then crazy about a movie being made from the book - hype, hype and more hype. In the end, both were actually mediocre.

(And I'm being extremely complimentary to the book here. It was probably the worst written book I've ever had the pleasure to stop reading in disgust!)

Me too - so many of them were so obvious! However, the film was even worse in that respect, in that it really drew them out laboriously.

A key gripe I had with the book, that I suppose the film improved upon, was that Dan Brown was clearly very keen to show off his own knowledge: The main character is always mentioning or thinking about a certain fact that is almost entirely irrelevant.

I think the Ron Howard nomination was awfully cheap. There were dozens, perhaps hundreds, of more poorly directed films this year than Da Vinci Code.
True. If they had a category for "Biggest Disappointment of the Year" then it would have been a fair nomination.

Me too. It was nothing amazing, but it was a sweet story.

I also found the The Wicker Man OK in itself - it was just pointless to have it as well as the original.

Probably not winning a Razzie is worse. That means the performance was so mediocre that it wasn't even worth hating.

I think mediocrity is worse than just about anything.

But... she was just playing the same type of part she always plays and I think she did a very nice job of being Lindsay Lohan in that movie, as usual.

I liked Snakes on a Plane. That ruled!

Samuel. Snakes. A plane. How can you go wrong with that?
Answer: You can't.

I'm a little surprised that Snakes on a Plane didn't make an appearance.
