Review for "Brokeback Mountain"

Mythic Marlboro Men exposed.

I think my review tells more about what happens in this movie that the actual title! Not only does it imply the genre, but the theme, as well as some of the "action."

Why would this be declined? No reason was given.

Hi there Hermione, and welcome to fwfr. I went to your page to vote on some of your reviews, but didn't see any! Hope to see some more from you.

I think your review was the result of a 'line-call', i.e., it was considered marginal and was declined. I'd say the reason would be that there weren't any Marlboro Men in the movie (I'm only guessing here, I haven't seen the movie). Secondly, the review could conceivably relate to other Westerns where the quintessential cowboy (i.e., 'Marlboro Man') was exposed for something else, e.g., murder/cattle theft etc, rather than for his sexuality. This makes it moderately generic.

Options? Re-submit the review, and perhaps write as:-

"Mythic 'Marlboro Men' exposed."

The ' ' suggest that they are metaphorical Marlboro Men, and remove any incorrectness implicit in your review. I'd guess it would have half a chance in that format, but obviously I can't promise anything.

Other options may be to make it more specific to the movie, e.g.:-

"'Marlboro Men's' sexuality exposed." etc.

As a rule, make your reviews reasonably specific to the movie, make them intelligible to others, and make them correct, if you do all those three they should pass. Hope this helps.

I agreee with Sean. If there actually was a Marlboro Man, the review works. Or even if the characters were constantly smoking. There has to be some sort or real connection to the Marlboro Man other than the fact that they are cowboys.

Keep working at it Hermione.
Everyone gets reviews turned down. I'd say about half of mine are dumped in the trash bin.
Eventually you'll get the hang of it.

Actually, Hermione is right on the money in my opinion. It IS specific to the sexual issue and is NOT generic... Here's why:

The "Marlboro Man" was a marketing tool which leveraged the macho cowboy myth to sell cigarettes... so he's depicted lighting up using a kerosine lamp and in other "rugged" poses. But the original model who was called the "Marlboro Man" (mustache and all) turned out to be gay.

This article suggests it was deliberately marketing to gay men.

Hermione, you could appeal this one, and/or go at it more bluntly (I was thinking of doing this after reading yours, but you deserve the votes for the concept):

Actually, they both do smoke in the movie - although I wouldn't say it was "constant" smoking, but I noticed it.

I knew one of the Marlboro Men, a real life cowboy, Wayne Dunafon. You can see some pictures of him on this page: http://www.geraldroberts.com/party2000.html

He was just as handsome in his golden years as he was in his prime.

Wayne told this story to a local paper about when he was discovered. When a young man, he was riding in a rodeo at Madison Square Garden. he had been warned about big city "types".

So, when a city fella said, "You sure look good in those jeans," and handed him a business card, Wayne was a little leery. As it turned out the city fella worked for an ad agency and was looking for cowboys to be models.

In the interview I read which was written back in the 70's, he denied that smoking had any correlation with cancer.

However, shortly before he died of lung cancer, he let it be known that he had taken up smoking at the insistence of the cigarette maker.

Wayne was married to a former stewardess that he had met on a flight and they had two children, a daughter and a son.

Well, some of my reviews for Brokeback Mountain were a bit similar, but they were accepted: "Marlboro men go gay" and "Ennis del Marlboro Man".

I stand corrected... could have been a different marlboro man, a completely false rumor or just bad memory on my part. There were some articles on the possibility of the deliberate marketing.

Sorry for your friend.

Sounds like a perfectly respectable urban legend to me.

Here is some info about more Marlboro Men: http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/marlboro.htm

Lemmy, that was a shameless plug to your own review of 'Marlboro Mann' for The Insider.

However it worked and you got my vote! Brilliant review!

Pardon my recidivism. I used to be a shameless plugger until Randall set me on the straight and narrow. I occasionally fall back to my evil ways and I rely on my fellow site members to get me back on the straight and narrow after a few stiff votes.
