Hello.
I'm wondering if you could supply some examples of sequels which begin *exactly* where the previous one ended. That is to say, there's been NO passage of time (cinematically) between the two films -- the plot of one picks up exactly where the last one left off. So far, I can think of "Halloween II," "Weekend at Bernie's 2," and "Back to the Future, Parts II & III." The idea is that, instead of following the familiar characters on a NEW adventure which takes place a few years down the road, we see that the previous one hadn't actually concluded yet. I suppose the "Lord of the Rings" sequels fall into this category, though I'm really looking for sequels in which the very first SCENE even matches the final scene of the previous film.
Thanks again. |

| Porky's 2 was a brilliant concept - it's even in the title. It begins the day after the previous film's events and gives a rare glimpse at the immediate repercussions from the shenanigans which ended the first film - usually convenient plot contrivances where the bad guys are vanquished and consequences are not considered. |

| The sequel to POTC: Dead Man's Chest will have to fall into this category considering the way #2 finished. |

I don't know if this is what you're thinking about, but I immediately thought of the old, old silent "cliff hanger" movies, which were exactly that - the film would end with someone in grave danger (like hanging from a cliff) and the next one would begin from that same scene.

Oooh, yes ... The Perils of Pauline! At age 7 I was SURE her head was going to be smushed by that oncoming train. Then, the following week -- she rolled off the track with seconds to spare. Whew!!!!
But hey, wait -- those were serials and meant to carry on week by week. Probably the reason there are so few features that comply with Joe's criteria is because most sequels aren't financed until the studio sees the bo return on the first film. By then, years have elapsed and the new film needs to stand on its own to appeal to the maximum market.
But hey, wait -- Joe asks questions for film-analists and fun
I'll get my coat

Possibly "The Three Musketeers" and "The Four Musketeers" from the 70's. Like "Back To The Future" they were shot back to back, and originally was shot as a single film but then split in to 2 seperate films. I can't remember how closely the second follows on from the first though. |

Rockys I, II, III, IV and V.
On a Rocky geek note, I especially liked how Rocky V begins with Stallone in the shower (well, not that part especially) after the bout in IV and finds his hands still shaking due to the brain damage received in the fight- almost gives the series a bit of credibility- almost.
Rush Hours 1 and 2- part 1 ends with the pair heading where part 2 will take place.
Resident Evils 1 and 2 also fit together very nicely.
Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions.
Star Trek Wrath of Khan and Search For Spock.
I think they also did this trick retrospectively with Red Dragon leading back into Silence. |

The original "Dawn of the Dead" does take place the following morning after "Night of the Living Dead." It's in a completely different part of the country so it's featuring completely different characters...but it does pick up right where the previous film left off.
"Day of the Dead," however, is much later after "Dawn." And "Land of the Dead" is many years later. |

It's been a while, but didn't "Shagged" start right where "Austin Powers" ended? With the fembot honeymoon? |

| Batman Begins is a reboot. You have to consider it as completely seperate from the previous four movies. New series, new plotlines. Everything that came before doesn't count. |

Number 4 is what I like to term the 'Moonraker' of the series- as a kid, it was the best ever in the series, but watching it now you go "It's a bit stupid really" (and in terms of Rocky sequels, that's saying something). Of particular note (the Russians switching allegiance midway through the boxing aside), keep an eye out for the extra tacky HUGE robot (and I ain't talking about Dolph here) added for the sole purpose of 'wacky humour'.
Still, it's a Rocky film and I have to love it (albeit less than the others). |
