Okay, I'm confused about this section.
And concerned that it sometimes causes tempers to rise. Maybe I'm getting Zen-ner in my dotage, but let's cool it with some queries.

Here's what I've noticed: some people who've been onsite since it was steam-powered sometimes get narked when newbies and slightly-less-newbies see a category like "duplicate reviews" "reviews that are wrong" etc. and take it at face value. After all, it seems to be a lovely public way of helping benj to do the house-keeping. So, when there's something to add, it's logical to assume this is the place to post it.

But - apart from some where benj acknowledges with his concise but effective "Fixed, ta" - posting sometimes seems to cause bad vibes. Sometimes this is because the person, review, whatever singled out feels embarrassed/persecuted, and sometimes it's because the person pointing out the errors seems to be a tad too vigilant.

I don't actually know whether we're MEANT to post these anomalies, or whether a few senior FWFRers have been assigned such house-keeping duties and all others should butt out

What I do know is this shouldn't become a cause for argument or bad blood. We all love FWFR, and we all want to keep it good for Benj, and help him make it better. I suspect this is yet another case of the site's having grown like Topsy, and we just need some adjustment/clarification.

Please can everyone just shake cyber-hands?

And, just a tentative pragmatic suggestion taken from another Forum I visit -- perhaps we could have a Category named Nit-Picks, where the contributions are all offered/taken in a slightly lighter, less judgmental tone.

Ahem - essay over. I'll get me coat.

"Re: any comment in this post on English usage..."

If it doesn't say it's FWFR-specific, it's not!

I take your point, but I think the best way to go would be to take as a general rule "Do not enter this section if it is going to annoy you!" - then everyone would be happy. I rarely name names in the instances I point out, specifically so as not to embarrass people. Therefore, people have to enter the Maintenance section and then the specific thread and then click on the link before they can even possibly take umbrage. I also do not often state this one was first, that one was second etc. (unless there is a voting discrepancy that ought to be addressed), as benj can see this for himself if he decides one case should be deleted.

Another good rule is to do as one would be done by. I wouldn't care if someone raised a review etc. of mine to which they objected, but if I didn't think it were wrong, I would fight for it.

Anyone may bitch about any of my reviews. They aren't a cure for cancer, after all. When I was new here, my reviews were as precious to me as a child's first deposit into a potty training chair is to him. (How's that for a bad metaphor? My fellow parents here may be familiar with the term "prize turd.")

Now I am older and duller and I don't care anymore.

As neither a newbie nor someone here when it was steam-powered, I agree with Duh, and I really appreciate what Salopian said here. I thought people had to point all that stuff out and am very happy to just identify the posts from here on out.

In general in the world of forums, which I have used since they were steam-powered, one must take everything with a grain of salt. It is fruitless and a waste of energy to defend a review if, in words I've used before, another one is older and "substantially the same".

Actually, this section is precisely designed to single people out (like you Randall!) and to name names (you know who I'm talking about Sean!), specifically for the purpose of letting people know exactly who's who (don't run away thefoxboy!). It's just that certain people (yeah you AussieCanuck!) lend themselves to public identification (not like I'm talking about Conan the new-topic-every-couple-of-weeks-or-so or anything!). And rightly so, I might add (benj!!).

Oh yeah, and some people just like to see their names on the screen (like that MguyX).
