Best Visual Effects

What Was Snubbed: The BFG

Best Animated Short
What Should Win: Borrowed Time

So, where does that lead us?

Lion is a decent film that treads water during the 2nd act. The interview on "60 Minutes" with the real-life person that Lion is based on told the story in a concise and emotionally engaging way. It did in 10 minutes what Lion does in almost two hours.

The Jungle Book was among the year's most complex films of the year in terms production values and had a screenplay that really worked, and yet it only got one award nomination.

This is the first year where I felt there was a perfect category: Best Animated Short. Another short by Dreamworks that was really good, but wasn't eligible for a nomination, was "Kung Fu Panda Secrets of the Scroll." It is available on Netflix and is about a half hour long.

On the other hand, I'm glad to see the level of respect La La Land is receiving.

My snubbed award goes to Janelle Monae in Hidden Figures. She was the heart of that film and was just stellar!!!

I also look forward to this list.

In no way diminishing Viola Davis' well earned Supporting trophy, I thought Manchester-By-The-Sea would have been greatly diminished without Michelle Williams to tie the (burned out) room together.
