This wonderful filmmakerwho directed such classics as The Battle of Algiers and Queimada, the latter with Brando, died this morning. Almost single-handedly he pioneered features of socio-political import which had the look and feel of documentary, but made more accessible by including story and character. e.g. there would never have been Platoon, or Saving Private Ryan if Pontecorvo hadn't done his thing.

Who'll fill Gillo's shoes?
