Just wanted to thank Benj for this site. I was told about a movie where my organization was mentioned and looked the movie up on IMDb. For the fun of it, I decided to ask for it to be added to the database here (no pressure Benj, I know you'll get around to it). Today my boss asked about that movie and all I had to do was look in my pending pile, find the link I put in and voila!

(Now I don't feel so guilty about clicking here when I need a break for a few minutes at work.)

What's the movie, Choccie?

Shanghai Ghetto is the movie.

I have a funny story about Shanghai Ghetto:

My mother is the director of the library at a large synagogue in Los Angeles and once a month she screens DVDs of Jewish-themed movies for little old ladies to enjoy. She doesn't charge admission. Its just a DVD player in the library and some coffee and cookies afterwards. A year ago, she screened Shanghai Ghetto. The producer of Shanghai Ghetto called her last month and told her that she now owes him $350 because she violated the copyright law that is clearly stated on the FBI warning on the DVD cover and visually before the film begins. She explained that she didn't charge for it and it was just a bunch of little old ladies watching it in the same room, but he wouldn't give up. He even went so far as to tell her that he could have contacted her through his lawyer, but decided to be nice. My mom said she doesn't even have $350 to pay him with. In the end, the guy accepted $200 in exchange for the rights to show his movie 30 times publically without fear of legal action. I told my mom that now that she has the rights, she should show the movie publically every day for the next month to get her money's worth!

Shanghai Ghetto is the movie. This was particularly interesting to us because my boss and I just took over the Africa & Asia desk. I work for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.

Of course, it isn't the only movie where we get a mention. We got lots of coverage in the mini-series Holocaust, among others. And there was a "documentary" of a Polish guy who claimed he was one of the orphans that we took care of after the war in an AJJDC run orphanage. I put that in quotes because the guy lied - he was never there.
