Posted - 02/18/2008 : 03:16:50 It looks like Toshiba is about to let HD-DVD turn up it's toes and Sony's Blu-Ray will feast on it's corpse. It's about time, a couple of years overdue IMO.
I think the turning point was Sony supplying a Blu-Ray player in it's PlayStation 3. What better way of increasing market share than giving your players away for free?
Here's an article from today on the matter, and another from a couple of days ago. I think HD-DVD's fate is sealed.
Just curious, has anyone got an HD-DVD or a Blu-Ray player, or started buying/renting their discs? I haven't, I've been waiting for a winner before even thinking about it.
Although to be quite honest, I'm not sure the difference between Blu-Ray, and a 576p (progressive scan PAL) DVD displayed on a TV with a good upscaler is particularly great. I got myself a 50" HD-capable TV a couple of months ago, and play DVDs on 576p, and even my letterboxed 4:3 format movies (i.e, no anamorphism) look great, and look much sharper than they did on my 32" non-upscaling interlace-only 3-year old TV. From my sofa I'm not aware of any pixellation, it's all been removed by the upscaler, so I can see Blu-Ray being only a slight improvement.

I have 6 million to blow on this system, and I'm not going to invite any friends over? Sad, very sad.
Not really- one of the things I love about cinema is that it doesn't have to be a social event. Even the loneliest person in the world can enjoy cinema. Sure, you can invite other people in on it too but it's far from necessary. If I did invite others into my cinema, the slightest bit of yapping and they'd be forcibly ejected out the $6 million rear exit.
Agreed. And no coughing. Or shuffling. Or breathing...
You got it. Not even that whisper talking, where you can still hear people's lips slapping together on the P's and T's. In fact, I just got back from my weekly "Shush"ing session in the cinema- had to repeatedly shush a couple of Germans this time around
I hope you didn't mention the war.
I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it. |

You know what? Skip getting an HD TV, this is what we all need to get...

If I were to spend 6 mil on a home theater, I'd think I'd include seating for more than 3 people.
Sod that- the reason I'd want a home cinema is precisely so that I don't have to put up with other peoples' interruptions. And the more people you have, the more likely a conversation will break out
True enough, I suppose, if you're inviting a crowd -- but at least add another couch, say, so 2 couples can enjoy a movie night together.

I'm not sure how many more you'd want but I bet it would include a popcorn machine.
(Gotta have a popcorn machine. And someone to make the popcorn and serve up the cold drinks to go with it.)

I might get the new non-Blu Ray one then. The reason for getting it is just that (in my aforementioned 'sucker' mentality) a box set of box sets is more perfect than just some box sets.
I know what you mean- I've got the individual box sets and it absolutely drives me nuts that series one is about 4mm taller than the proceeding series (don't get me started on inconsistent spine layouts either). Sad I know, but one big box is so much tidier, not to mention compact. |

The reason for getting it is just that (in my aforementioned 'sucker' mentality) a box set of box sets is more perfect than just some box sets. I wouldn't re-buy many titles, but this is my favourite ever fiction series. Also, assuming that the big box just contains all the series boxes in identical format to their individual releases (which I think is fairly likely), then I would sell those and slot my current box sets in their place. Given that the big box is 70 pounds, I'd only have to sell each of the individual ones for 14 pounds to break even. Since when first released they were around 45 pounds, this is not out of the question.
I'm glad I have never yet got around to buying Star Wars on D.V.D., though. |

O.K., on Blu-Ray, is the idea that it can be applied to any film, i.e. it is just a case of turning the celluloid into more pixels rather than something that needs to be decided when the film (or programme) is made?
It's just a case of turning the celluloid into more pixels.quote: I'm asking because a complete box set is now out for Six Feet Under. As I already have all the individual box sets, I'll only consider getting this if there's not going to be a better version later.
There could be a better version later, but it's likely to be a long way off, i.e., when Blu-Ray High Definition becomes superseded by a newer, even higher-definition format.
Oops, just realised I misunderstood your post. I thought you said you already had the box sets, and were saying that there's a Blu-Ray version out now and you were wondering whether to get it, as it might be superseded later by something better than Blu-Ray. I think I didn't understand why you'd want a complete box set if you already had box sets.
But yeah, as benj suggested a Blu-Ray version should be out sometime. However, I really have no idea how long it'll take to re-do everything on the planet that's currently on DVD into Blu-Ray. I suspect that a lot of stuff will never get done, there are still movies that haven't been put onto DVD and you have to rely on the VHS. Same with LPs, not all has yet been put onto CDs. So be patient. |

Thanks both. O.K., so do the Blu-Ray discs also store more? That's bad news. I'm a sucker for nice D.V.D. boxes.
Yup- Blu-Ray's approximately 5-6 times the capacity of DVD. |
