Serious question.

I watch about 200-250 per year, have probably seen 1600-1900 at a guess, and am actually wondering if I'll ever run out of good movies to watch, but have no idea how many good movies exist.

So, has anyone ever tried to work this out? Of have any references where discerning movie watchers/critics have made some sort of count?

I know there are a few "1000 movies to watch before you die" lists floating around, so presumably there are quite a few thousand more that aren't essential but are still pretty watchable. So, how many? 3,000? 5,000? 20,000?

Also, does anyone have a rough idea of how many worthwhile movies are made per year these days? E.g., has anyone made a rough count of how many 2007 movies they thought were worthwhile?

Sean, given your love of the Swiss Gang Bang franchise, I think they are upto SGB1654. So there's another 654 movies for you to see.

Then it's time you pirated them from your private collection and sent them over. NOW!

Probably not too far off the mark.

Anyway, using a score over 6.5 (a good ballpark figure) and including straight-to-video and made-for-TV movies, but no TV series or episodes, the 'useful' figures I came up with are:-

Minimum 1000 votes - 5700 movies
Minimum 500 votes - 8300 movies
Minimum 200 votes - 13800 movies

so I'd say about 10,000 movies exist that are worth watching.

Luckily, movies are not extinct, so good movies continue to be made.

About 10% of them.

And that's more a guess than a scientifically whittled down number.

Maybe the 'About' had already given that away.

I have it on good authority (my six year old daughter) there are two: Enchanted and Labyrinth, with Mamma Mia coming in close behind.

Why can't you exclude video games on that IMDB search?
MisterBadIdea Posted - 01/27/2009 : 12:40:56
There are 17 good movies. 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of them, as is Airplane! and the first Austin Powers movie.

Holy crap, I tell a lie. IMDb does have a good filtering mechanism. There are 80,000 'movies' above 6 (not including straight to video movies and made for TV movies). So it doesn't look like I'll be running out any time soon.

I'll do some more filtering here shortly.

Edit: Minimum score 6 and minimum 1000 voters there are 6772 movies, that's 30 years viewing.

In 2007 there are 316 movies with the above criteria, but if I raise the score to 7 then there are 178. Looks like I was worrying about nothing.

@Conan: Yep, I agree with that, it's very subjective, but an extremely rough ball-park figure was what I was after. Right now I really don't even know what order of magnitude I'm looking at.

@Salopian: Yep I've looked at the IMDb search feature, and there are 170,000 titles above a score of 6, but most of those are TV episodes. It doesn't seem to allow filtering by 'class' (i.e, movies only). It's possible that IMDb Pro has a better search feature.

BTW, the 250/year has existed for about the last 4 years or so. It was more like 50/year in my teens.

I'm sorry to say that you're looking pretty haggard for eight years old, Sean.

You've got a score on the IMDB that you consider the benchmark, right? Can it tell you how many films have at least that score?

Part of it depends on your mood, your age, who you're with etc.

I've watched some movies that I quite enjoyed as a teenager that make me cringe now - Xanadu & You Can't Stop The Music are two that I'm prepared to admit I enjoyed in my less discriminating days.

Similarly some movies I wrote off as only for boring old farts have gained in stature as I've moved closer to that category.
