It's a sad day that we lose one of the gentlest, wittiest writers of our era. From the first his vision caught every joy and every scab of himself and us all. Happily his works live on.

I loved his books! After college I was living in Chicago and took the bus to work and consequently was able to read a lot. I decided to read all of Hemingway's books, but they were usually so dramatic that I alternated with Vonnegut books because his were so deliciously satirical and funny.

Hear, hear, Babe! No one will ever touch Vonnegut's brilliance. From my first exposure to him, I realized that he had the bizarre and amazing ability to make the reader laugh, cry and think . . . all at the same time! Many passages would cause me to begin to laugh, but then it would get cut off when I realized that the "joke" was making a harsh statement about the human condition.
The other thing that struck me was how he could tell a tale in such a way to change the reader's attitude through the story without changing the character. It was all in what was revealed. The best on this was "Sirens of Titan," in which, for the first third of the novel, you think the protagonist is the coolest guy in the world! For the second third, you find yourself wondering "What the heck is this guy doing?" and for the final third, you are thinking "What a dick!"
I highly recommend for the uninitiated that you begin reading Vonnegut as soon as possible. In fact, start with "Player Piano," his first, and read sequentially. You will not regret it!
