I thought I'd post this here followng the infamous confusion/suspicion over Philip Klass.

I have been receiving weird phone calls from a company claiming my name was entered to win a vacation, and that this happened at Macy's ( I don't shop at Macy's and neither does anyone I know) If I stay on the line I can speak to a representative, blah blah blah, and for the low, low price....

This is apparently fairly common and basically means my number has been sold to a telemarketing firm, and when I spoke to someone there and asked that they take my name off their list, they put me on hold and then the line went dead.

More info about this lot here:
http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-616-980-2082

I know this aggressive telemarketing is common, but today I received another weird hang up on my answering machine, with the call display
1 797 *** ****

I checked on the Net and there is to my knowledge no area code 797 in North America.

But then I stumbled on a site about phone scams from India and the area code that shows up is (179), which made me think the number was actually 179-7*** **** (I know, that makes the actual number 8 digits, not seven).

Has anyone here received weird phone calls/messages/hang ups with 179 or 797 showing up on call display???? Or am I making a simple mistake..Is there a legit. area code 797 and I simply have not found it...

Okay, call off the conspiracy theorists. It turns out it was someone calling me on their UK mobile phone. My call display omitted the country code and just showed the mobile nmber...

There is also the national Do Not Call list, which is something everyone should get on. Then you can hang up in confidence knowing that legitimate businesses won't violate that law.

I wish we had that here. We keep getting recorded messages from one crazy rabbi or another trying to convince us to either send our kids to some religious school system, become religious ourselves, come to some right-wing crazy religious demonstration, or vote for someone that has the religious population's interests at heart. Hanging up is our only choice, but for some reason, the phone line gets tied up until the recording finishes.

I have a unlisted number, I don't any calls like that.
However, my number is very close to the number of the local newsagent, I get calls early on a Saturday morning saying "I didn't get my newspaper delivered this morning", I say "Ok, sorry, just come into the store and I will give you a $20 voucher"
Would love to know what happens when they go asking for the voucher.
