Just heard this one on the late news, from a Welsh politician talking about home rule for Wales:

"....Devolution is evolving..."

(With apologies to Ron Shelton and Tim Robbins)

Life is just like baseball. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. And sometimes...it rains.

If you took a notion, I'll bet
You could teach a hog to smoke a cigarette
Well, it might take a little bit of time
But hell, what's time to a hog.

There's a whole philosophy in that statement.

I've used this whenever I possibly can:

Although I can accept talking scarecrows, lions and great wizards of emerald cities, I find it hard to believe there is no paperwork involved when your house lands on a witch.

That's hysterical...I'd ask for your permissoion to use that myself but I've already sent it off twice to people I know!!

I'm glad you like it. You have my belated approval to use it however you choose!!

There are tons of really good ones that you've already mentioned. How about:

"If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something."

Sir, you are like a pin, but without either its head or its point.
-- Douglas Jerrold

"If you want to forget all your other troubles, wear too tight shoes."

While all of Mary Schmich's "Wear Sunscreen" speech has tons of good advice, my favourite is:

"Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone."

Well here are a couple that I know

"If things are coming your way, then you are driving on the wrong side of the road" Anon

And here is a quotation inspiried by a Far Side comic strip

"An optimist sees the glass half full, a pessimist sees the glas half empty. I just see bad service, since I ordered a fucking cheeseburger."

Life is not so short but that there is always time for courtesy
-Emerson (although I've occasionally seen this attributed to Churchill)

Love is a grave mental disorder
-Plato

Sex is one of the most wholesome, beautiful and natural experiences that money can buy
-Steve Martin

O what a tangled web we weave
When first we practice to deceive.

-- Sir Walter Scott

Which leads me to believe the fact is,
We really ought to get more practice.

-- Dorothy Parker

A passage from "The Right Stuff" struck me. Gus Grissom was never known for his philosophy so this was doubly ironic. In the heady days of the space race the astronauts were living legends. In one visit to a manufacturer the astronauts were asked to address the workers. While other astronauts were more media savvy , old Gus plainly wasn't.

When it got to him he mumbled into the mike " Do Good Work ". Presumably a joke meaning " It's my butt up there so make sure everything is o.k "

A week later another team from NASA arrived and found that the workers had a huge banner put up with the words " Do Good Work " in twenty foot high letters.

It's not a bad philosophy tho , however unintended

Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today, becuse if you do it today and like it, you can do it again tomorrow.

My personal favourite (and signature, when I can use it):

"What you see before you, my friend, is the result of a lifetime of
chocolate."
--Katharine Hepburn (May 12, 1907 - June 29, 2003)

You don't use the box of chocolates quote from Gump?

No - that's way too pedestrian for me. Katharine Hepburn is my all-time favourite actress, and I admire her all the more because she had a love of chocolate!
