Although it seems somewhat arbitrary whether the hyphen was replaced by a space or the words were concatenated, i.e., can anyone see any reason not to do it like this? :-

I've never seen "ice cream" hyphenated and it's definitely not a single word. Same with "bumblebee," "crybaby," "leapfrog," "lowlife," and "chickpea." I don't know what kind of English folks have been writing across the pond but these "new spellings" are the way we've always been doing them.

Icecream? Ice-cream? Um...no. It's ice cream, which is shortened from the original "iced cream." And yes, as a New Englander I consider myself an authority on the subject.
