I'm keeping an eye on this one. It might actually be the long-term solution to piracy. I.e., when it becomes clear how much money artists are or aren't making from selling their music, and the cost of theft becomes clear, it's quite possible that enough music consumers will be honest enough to reward their artists and allow them to live off making music. And cutting out the middlemen may make music a lot cheaper.
E.g., lets say people get into the habit of paying (on average) $5-10 for an album, and the artist gets ALL of it, they're probably better off than selling CDs via retailers. And the consumer gets cheap music (not as cheap as stealing it of course).
I wouldn't pay 1c for Radiohead. I wouldn't pay 1c for my favourite artist if it was mp3. mp3 sucks arse, they're banned from my house.  I'd need the full 600MB non-compressed audio files before I'd even contemplate downloading any music. |
