She was da bomb.

[NB: this is hyperbole and irony, not a personal endorsement.]

That's a very good point, Sal. That seems to be the case when one is or becomes a martyr. Their perceived greatness just keeps growing and growing.

I am sure he is ecstatic at the prospect of being the next target.

Yep, she was certainly not flawless, but the prospects of true democracy are sure to be weakened by her death. Huh? The facts are mean and heartless: you CAN'T hurt their feelings.

My bad. I was trying to hurt your facts' feelings.

Wait a minute.

I'm sensing an undercurrent of somewhat undeserved beatification here. The fact that Ms. Bhutto was assassinated is horrific: nothing need be said to anyone of any degree of thought and intelligence on that issue. However, I am not willing to canonize her merely because she was killed in the midst of political unrest.

Ms. Bhutto was no Ghandi (Mahatma). Her prior stints as Prime Minister were not spotless, and has Koli has suggested, her personal agenda was not without its own conflicts. The corruption scandals that rocked her two previous mandates and the significant evidence linking her to the murder of her own brother suggest that she was not only human but also significantly flawed. And while it will be unpopular to say this -- and we all know how often that has stopped me from saying what I want -- Ms. Bhutto was unthinkingly careless with her own security. She is on record with Wolf Blitzer opining about the failure of the government to provide her adequate security -- even issuing a publish-only-if-I-die implication of Masharraf -- there was a previous assassination attempt several months ago, Pakistan is known to harbor violent extremists, and the present political situation is extremely volatile. I sincerely wonder whether she was trying to become Pakistan's next Prime Minister or Pakistan's next martyr. What was here agenda? Do you really know? Were you really paying attention to Pakistani politics? Were you really that upset? [All references to "you" are generic and not directed at any particular person]

To the extent anyone here is even intimating that Ms. Bhutto is somehow the slain savior of Pakistan, you need to read the facts first. She was a colorful person and an interesting political figure -- especially as a woman in Islamic politics. But I'm not giving her wings just yet.

Don't be so quick to make saints of people just because they died in terrible ways.

Caveat: if you are going to vent displeasure at my observations, please direct your criticism and your analysis at the facts. Calling me "mean" and "heartless" doesn't really address whether my observations are accurate.

Apparently, she's had been afraid for her life for quite some time, and now we know just how right she was to feel that way.

I have to agree.

Me too. I gather that over the past few years she had changed, becoming rather haughty and treating everyone like lackies, but it's a dreadful thing to happen to her. Bad news for the stability of Pakistan too.

Bhutto bought it.

This is a depressing though predictable outcome.
