His wife and daughter died in a 'plane crash in Nepal, which adds such a sadness to his massive achievement.

He and Tensing Norgay agreed to not tell anyone who reached the summit first. All the Nepalis assumed it was Tensing and Hillary didn't contradict them, although it turned out decades later that it had been him.

Wow, what a great opportunity. Certainly worth the walk! Must really have been a Day to Remember!

Ever rest

My wife had fallen asleep on the couch during the evening news last night. When this story was reported, I said in a loud voice, "Oh my god, Hillary died!!"
Mrs. Wheelz sat up with a start and a gasp, then hit me rather hard on the arm when she realized I meant Sir Edmund, and not Clinton.

Peaked then troughed.

Fell from his peak.

He's been my hero since I was about 14 and started mountain climbing. He was a top bloke in every way imaginable.
BaftaBaby Posted - 01/11/2008 : 05:17:33
Climbed higher.

PS: just learned in his younger days he was a beekeeper and dropped out of school. Wound up top of the world with his face on the money!
