It's so sad when artists die young as they can't be replaced, and so many people miss out on what they might have done next.

Was he using barbiturates? Due to the danger, most sleeping pills these days aren't barbiturates. Standard sleeping pills these days are infinitely harder to die from.

Edit: Police are now suggesting an accidental overdose/drug-conflict of some sort. It doesn't really look like suicide at any rate.

That's another rumour, that he was suffering from pneumonia.

Some of these facts seem to be relevant:

The risks:

* Tolerance can quickly develop, which means regular users need more to get the effects they want.

* There is serious risk of overdose. This can kill.

* Mixing barbiturates with even small amounts of alcohol, heroin or tranquillisers can also be fatal.

* Repeated use can lead to psychological and physical dependency.

* Withdrawal from barbiturates can be difficult. Symptoms include irritability, nervousness, inability to sleep, nausea, and even convulsions.

* Sudden withdrawal from high doses can be fatal.

* Heavy users are also liable to bronchitis and pneumonia (because the cough reflex is suppressed) as well as hypothermia.

If it was an accident, as some people claim, then I apologize for expressing anger at his "throwing his life away on drugs." However, I'm still skeptical of the claim that it was an accident. I haven't ever heard of anybody who died of accidentally overdosing on sleeping pills.
I got the feeling from your ealier post that you were talking about overdosing on recreational drugs (e.g., heroin or something), which seems unlikely here, i.e., it's not being hinted at.

Reports (which are only speculation at the moment anyway) are hinting at something like a sleeping pill overdose. I've always thought that it takes more than a few extra pills to cause death (that's assuming the pills weren't barbiturates). Many people who attempt suicide by taking a whole bottle end up surviving (one of my cousins did a couple of years ago).

Yes, that was my feeling exactly. During the first moment that I heard that the death was drug related, I assumed it was illegal substance abuse such as heroin. Now that I understand that sleeping pills were involved, illegal substances is ruled out, but I agree with Sean when he says that it takes more than a few extra pills to cause someone to overdose and die. I've heard of kids tragically and accidentally taking too many pills and dying because they don't know any better, but I never heard of a grown man doing the same, and so I'm still skeptical of the hypothesis that Ledger's death was accidental.

Will have to wait for the toxicology reports anyway, as the autopsy seems to have come up with nothing (which excludes stuff like cardiomyopathy etc).

Not that it really makes much differnce now.

Batman returns. Joker doesn't.

I have a friend who was on the pills that Ledger was on for a time. There was one night that sticks out in my mind, when he took some pills to go to sleep, and then awoke an hour or two later, thinking he hadn't been to sleep and hadn't taken his pills. He took another dose, and then woke again hours later thinking the same thing. If someone hadn't taken the pills off him before he took a third dose he might well have carried on taking them all night. I don't know if that might have happened here, but it's definitely possible.

He had pneumonia and had been having trouble sleeping and had OTC and prescription meds in his home. He died of a cardiac arrest. Hopefully he did not die at his own hand, by either negligence or purpose.

If I had pneumonia I'd give serious consideration to cancelling my masseuse appointment.

How about you guys?

Might depend on her lungs.

I'm in shock! He had such amazing potential. A very, very sad day!

I'm as shocked and saddened by this as the rest of you, but I'm also angry at him. Why do so many talented and successful people throw it all away on drugs? If he had been killed in a car accident, he would have at least kept his dignity.
