We caught the Boston Legal bug halfway through series 3. We are now into series 4 over here.
This is one of the better things on the telly at the moment. Sharp script, some proper laugh out loud moments mixed with the gentler stuff, serious points to be made, and some good casting. William Shatner as the lecherous old lawyer is absolutely spot on. James Spader and Candice Bergen also feature in the worlds most disfunctional law firm.
Does anyone else in FWFRworld watch this? If you don't, you ought to give it a try.

I don't think you were ever really supposed to like Ally, actually. She was a mess and for the most part, you felt sorry for her. What I think made it popular was that it made people realize that people who look perfect on the outside are actually far from perfect on the inside, while some who seem terribly flawed on the surface are actually far better off. That was, I think, the point to the show - it put a type of real reality in front of us where we saw the down-sides of the "beautiful people" and the true beauty of those we might normally overlook (or look away from).

I love this show, it's a hundred times better than The Practice ever was and I won't even call it a spinoff. It's very much in the tradition of LA Law, with just the right mix of courtroom drama, personal drama, humor, sex, and UTTER ABSURDITY. It's also clear from watching it that William Shatner has totally lost his mind.

Gotta admit that I too am a David E. Kelley fan. I even liked "Doogie Houser M.D." (but am now enjoying Neil Patrick Harris on "How I Met Your Mother" and thrilled he moved from child to adult TV star so nicely), but got totally hooked with "L.A. Law" and "Chicago Hope". I wish we had gotten "Picket Fences" here, and we only got one season of "Boston Public". While I loved "Ally McBeal" the last season with Jon Bon Jovi was just blah. But I adore "Boston Legal" and now that Candice Bergan is on the show, I've got my husband hooked as well (he really dislikes William Shattner so until she showed up, he wasn't thrilled).

Almost anything David Kelley is involved in is a surefire season pass at the RockGolf residence. It started with the episodes of LA Law that he wrote, then moved the absolutely terrific and virtually forgotten Picket Fences, then Chicago Hope, Ally McBeal, Boston Public and The Practice. Yeah, he had a couple of dud series along the way, but what a batting average!
He's adapting "Life On Mars" for US TV, and I think he's one of the few writers who could make it work. I've only seen season one of the BBC version. ("Where's my PC?" "Are you looking for a constable?")
