I am in the Apple Store on the iPhone. It is slow and very fiddly but still damned nice.

It makes your internet go quicker, meaning you can watch things like iPlayer wherever you are. If you don't plan to do anything like that then, yep- you don't need it.

On size, I think that old the-smaller-the-better thing is kinda out of fashion now. My smallest ever 'phone was my first one, in 2001. I certainly wouldn't want the iPhone to have a smaller screen (for either image or keypad purposes) and it is fairly flat.

I agree regarding screen size for image or keyboard purposes but, personally, I don't want to lug around something that size and that fragile all day long. If I want to watch video I'll take my PSP with me (heck, they reckon the next thing for phones is inbuilt projectors anyway, so screen size may not matter). If I plan to type something sizeable I'll take my laptop. I usually know if I'll be needing to kill a few hours long before I leave the house. The rest of the time I'll just happily travel around with a nice, robust, small phone.

To be honest, aside from cost, this is the big stumbling block for the iPhone for me. If they could make it smaller, like a toy, I'd be loving it. I'm the same with iPods- the Nano is still my favourite, anything else is just a brick.

On the June thing, will it also apply to old iPhones that randoms can write software? (As you can tell, I have no idea how these things work.)

Yup- worst case scenario, it'll be a software update you need to download (free for iPhone users, probably chargeable for iTouch users).

The 8GB one (which is fine for me as I have no digital music) is now 169 while the 16GB one is 329. Do you know if the new one is definite and what the difference is supposed to be? The only thing it's lacking that I would be keen on is the ability to film video clips (and that's only while I've got the kittens). I asked about that specifically and they said it would definitely be a software change if it were brought in.

Everyone seems about as sure as you can be (given this is Apple) that the new model's coming in June- this ties in with the price drop offer (to clear out the current stock) and why it 'expires' on the 1st of June.

The biggest change is likely to be 3G in the next iPhone, since it was so lacking in the current one and this requires extra physical hardware to be supported, but there's also talk of a redesign (but not any smaller sadly). Apparently, the current iPhone would be capable of recording video but the software doesn't support it and nobody's saying why this is. If Apple doesn't get around to writing a video recording app, I'm sure someone will come June when the world and his dog (and 100) can write software for it.

Frankly, if you're not fussed about 3G or having an 'old looking' iPhone in a couple of months' time then there doesn't seem to be a real reason to wait, except if you want an even cheaper iPhone 1.

Sorry to hear you've got the kittens- hope it clears up soon

If you're thinking of buying one, bear in mind that there's a very good reason they've just dropped the price by 100: a somewhat improved iPhone is expected at the start of June.
