Posted - 05/06/2008 : 04:42:35 duh - don't know all the specifics but I heard that 8 Belles may have had weak ankles as part of its lineage - not sure if tihs is just speculation or not, but it does seem that these horses get overworked especially at the elite level. |

It bothers me also, that there was an amazing filly who could outrun the colts, and now she's been removed from the gene pool.
This has brought about a lot of discussion about breeding for soundness as well as speed. |

I don't detest horse racing, because of what the industry offers as a whole.
It would be a good thing if they wouldn't start riding/racing the youngsters until they're three years old. That would reduce the incidence of injuries tremendously.
I knew you'd respond, duh. :) I've been to the racetrack, and what bothered me about it the most was the drugs listed on the program each horse received. It bothers me that in order to satisfy the masses, an animal has to receive Lasix to keep its heart and lungs from failing. For what it's worth, though, I don't like dog races either. I didn't watch the Derby this year and haven't since my trip to the racetrack, it just bothers me that another beautiful animal like this had to be destroyed.
