I am not sure it is exactly 'something to be proud of', but I will say it took more courage than anything else I've done this year.
"Balut", apparently the most terrying food in the world (not true, obviously, but see last entry anyway)
And this site gives perhaps a better picture
It took some heavy peer pressure from a couple of locals here in manila before i could bring myself to eat it, although it's better than it looks and is sold on many street corners here.
Thought I would share, isn't every day i eat something this 'unusual' |

In Phnom Penh for 4 days with miss alice, came across a roadside cart selling fried locust, fried larvae and various other fried insects.
Took a log hard look but couldn't bring myself to try the locust, but we did share a fried spider (about half the size of a tarantula). Didn't intrinsically taste of much, although had been cooked in a tasty sweet barbeque type sauce.
Was tough to take the first bite, went into and out of my mouth about three times before i finally bit off a leg. took somewhat longer before i could persuade myself to chomp into the soft, juicy looking belly (although it turned out to be crunchy).
Was impressed that even 14 year-old Miss Alice managed a leg.
Maybe next year I'll try the locust, maybe not ... |

When I was a child our Cat had Kittens and at breakfast i watched our cat devour one of then and it freaked me until it was pointed out to me that it was only the placenta.

Once when my mum cracked an egg it turned out that it had been fertilised. I didn't get a close look, but after that I found eating eggs an ever more grotesque concept. |

I once thought I was brave for trying a couple of grilled whole sparrows (squishy heads included) while living in Japan, but that country is far tamer than what you can get in others.
While the Koreans have their baby mouse wine, the Japanese prefer a cup of poisonous snake sake or snapping turtle blood (boosts virility, evidently).
