Here's a poignant article about the meaning of Fathers' Day to President Obama and others.

I nearly cried reading this, because I learned yesterday that my neighbor's (who drove me crazy with her naive enthusiasm for candidate Obama) older daughter has found herself pregnant by an indifferent boyfriend.

I put a positive face on it for my friend: how much fun the baby will be, and so on. But I wonder, what in the hell is WRONG with young women? Birth control and contraceptive information is so available, there is no excuse for this. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

I can understand a gal in her 30's choosing to have a child if she has not been fortunate enough to find a good man to settle down with. But a girl in her 20's (or younger) has plenty of time.

To me, it seems selfish to deprive a child of the opportunity to have a father. I know there are lots of single moms who have done a fine job of parenting their children. But from what I saw of my husband playing with our children, I think that the value of a father simply cannot be underrated.
