Well done to the US Army for getting the rescue effort going so swiftly and to such practical effect in Haiti.

This is what disciplined troops and sophisticated equipment are best used for. Saving lives. I'm proud of such a heroic decision.

World Food Aid and other noble rescue and relief organizations are trying to coordinate efforts in a place without communications, airport, and such chaos. Cuba has sent a medical delegation skilled in emergency field medicine. The UK and France have announced financial aid.

We're hearing horrible stories of nearly dead babies tossed onto garbage heaps. Of rumors of aid not reaching pockets of suffering people. But people are working against all the odds to bring some ease.

I hope we all, no matter how poor, can spare a few dollars, pounds, whatever to the international fund. Lots of little bits can help ease the plight of these devastated people.
