Just now, when I opened up my Netflix account, I saw the first two movies under "Movies for You:" Pearl Harbor and Tokyo Story.
 
This is funny/wrong on so many levels.
In case you're curious, these recommandations "were chosen based on [my] interest in" Titanic, Diary of a Country Priest, and The Bad and the Beautiful.

On some weird random level, this reminded me of the time I was watching music videos on late night TV and they played 'Smack My Bitch Up' followed immediately by 'Teletubbies Say Eh-ho!'
This could be a fun game though: worst ever film combos.
How about 'Amelie' followed by 'I Spit On Your Grave'?
Or 'Babe' followed by, er... 'Babe 2'? |

| It was the norm in the 40s to show two films in the local (as opposed to the downtown) cinemas. Sometimes for a variety of reasons (usually because the "A" movie was rather long) they showed the feature and some short subjects. My brother loved to tell the story of a theatre marquee highlighting "'Mother Wore Tights' and selected shorts". |

When I first started ordering from Amazon, the recommendations I got were pretty off the wall. Years later, after buying lots more stuff, listing all the stuff in my library that I already own, what I like and what I don't like, and which recommendations I wasn't interested in, I now take the recommendations very seriously because it's amazing how well they seem to have figured out my taste in music. The more selections you make, the more accurate the recommendations will get. It's all the more amazing when you consider that it's just a computer that's doing it...but obviously, the programming is pretty sophisticated as far as following the patterns of individual buyers and how their selections compare to the general trends. I'm sure Netflix is no different. Give it some time, eventually you'll start getting some good recommendations. |

| This thread reminds me of the site I first found thru FWFR over a year ago. It's called www.filmaffinity.com. You rate a number of movie on a scale from 1 to 10 and it recommends films based on your reviews and people who have similar tastes to you. Actually works quite well. |

It's a Spanish site and 16 of my 20 Movie Soulmates are Spanish and in fact only 2 are from non-hispanic countries, so there's a strong foreign language bias to recommendations. Having said that, there's a lot of films that keep cropping up from my various soulmates so they've got to be worth checking out. "Spirited Away", "The Hours","Pan's Labyrinth",and "The Pianist" are the ones I seem to need to get to see.

I actually don't mind this. It gives more visibility to those movies. 16 out of 21 of my soulmates are from Spanish-speaking countries; Spain counts for 14 of the 16. |
