Ford disconnects OnStar
(Cue nostalgia music) I found tears in my eyes when I heard about this death. My mom was a "hot-shot" Republican in the early 70s, active in local politics. She was invited to some fund raising thing in late 1973 where Gerald Ford was going to speak. My mom was a bit clumsy and managed to trip and fall going through the dinner line. Mr. Ford was the first one to reach her and helped her up. They then had a lovely chat as he helped her through line and to her table.
The next summer, when the political arena had greatly heated up over Watergate, my mom kept insisting that Nixon wouldn't resign. Her exact words were "I'll never live to see him resign!!!" True to her word, my mom died suddenly on August 5, 1974. Three days later Nixon resigned. I think she meant she didn't think it would happen, but one never knows.
In any case, Gerald Ford had a special place in my heart. He would prove to be the only Republican presidential candidate for whom I voted. (Fade out nostalgia music) |

| He has laid down the working tools of the craft and with them he has left that mortal part for which he no longer has use. His labors here below have taught him to divest his heart and conscience of the vices and superfluities of life, thereby fitting his mind as a living stone for that spiritual building -- that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Strengthened in his labors here by faith in God, and confident of expectation of immortality, he has sought admission to the celestial lodge above. |
