Yes, I am guaranteed to bring down the I.Q. level of this website. 
But, I wanted to know - 1) Has anyone been watching American Idol -- can you see it in the other countries? and 2) Do you think Simon was too harsh?
Going after someone's looks isn't very nice, but they do put themselves out there for critique when they try out for that show.

The appeal of the open auditions is obvious: this is The Gong Show all over again. It's pure schedenfreude...it's fun watching others humiliate themselves.
But I've never fully understood why the later episodes are so popular, too. Who cares who wins? |

| Simon tends to be critical like that only when his first criticism doesn't come through - the next guy that auditioned seemed to be of limited mental capacity and they basically just said this isn't for you - its the cocky people who have no idea that they are bad that he dials it up a bit to reset their level of expectations. |

We get it now only on the Israeli channel 3 (since our sat company had a fight with Star World and we no longer have that channel). The problem with 3 is that while you guys get it on Wednesdays and Thursdays, I get it Fridays and Saturdays.
As for Simon being harsh - this is what we've come to expect from him and he's playing up to his image. I don't care how harsh he is because he's really only saying what everyone else is thinking. If you haven't got the talent, you don't belong in a talent contest. If the contest is to find someone that people will admire and look up to, then if you look like a total freak you're not going to win, unless you've go so much talent you can't be ignored. So far, I haven't seen anyone really weird looking who had enough talent to overcome their looks. The closest we came was that kid from last season they called "Chicken Little", and he just looked a bit strange, plus they made him look much better once he was in the final 12. So yes, Simon should comment on that as well - he's not just looking for singing talent, he's looking for someone who has the potential to become a star - and that includes looks.

I completely agree. The news stations here (which do their best to deflect our attention from important issues like the war) are playing up how Simon really shouldn't have picked on that one guy and said he looked like a bush baby. Perhaps that was a little too honest of him, but they should expect comments on their looks if they want to become a Pop Star. Appearance is a major part of the package.
