No acting nomination for Sacha?

Is it just me, is this a weak year for movies?

Yep, it's really unfair - just an anti-comedy stance. I think it would be better if they had Best Actor/Actress for Drama and for Comedy, like some of the other awards.

Yes, but Shasha got nominated for a writing award ... that's the Academy's consolation prize. "We're wimps and not gonna give you an acting prize, but you were good so here's a little something ..." Comics don't win Oscars! (but comic writers do!)

Kind-a reminds me of what happened to Affleck/Damon in "Good Will Hunting" (kind-a, 'cause they weren't gonna get acting noms, but still ...)

I think there were better movies, but the Academy only has a memory of about 2 months, so any good movies from earlier in the year are out of luck.

It was only wishful thinking to hope for Cohen as a Best Actor nominee. My guess is that Forest Whitaker will take the statue, unless sufficient people feel Peter O'Toole has suffered enough.

But, as has been noted, nice comedy jobs sometimes do get the writing statue -- and at least this assures us that Cohen [and his lovely Isla...] will be present for the ceremony!

I was looking at a Rolling Stone article and they mentioned A Scanner Darkly for Best Animated film.

Is this category limited to 3?

What about Over The Hedge? Was that in 2006? I liked that.

And I definitely thought A Scanner Darkly was very cool.

This would be a gripe of mine too... Sacha Baron Cohen, Aaron Eckhart and Jack Nicholson ignored for some reason, and Leo gets another nod. I agree with Randall though, Forest Whitaker will surely win it for 'Last King of Scotland'.

My other gripe is the 'foreign language' category. Iwo Jima is shot entirely in Japanese. Why can that get nominated for 'Best Picture', while 'Pan's Labyrinth' misses out?! (I know why by the way, it's just exasperating!)

Nope, from the spontaneous responses of his victims.

Yikes, the only movie from that lot I've seen is Water! The pitfalls of living Downunder where we get movies months after the Northern Hemisphere, and then a few months later before the DVD comes out, and then a while after that until it comes to the front of my netflix queue. So, I don't think I'll be bothering to supply an "Oscar guess list" this year.

Many of those are on my "to view" list, but many others I won't be bothering with.
