I've been thinking about the lovely and various delights which FWFR offers the film fan, and those of which I've never partaken, either by hesitation or design. And those about which I've changed my mind. I'm wondering what, if any, you've all got that fall into either category.

Here are mine:
VOWED NEVER TO:
> Visit the alternative 4-word threads constructing even MORE fwfrs or constantly changing my avatar: haven't yet changed my mind so I honestly don't know what's through those cyber-doors.

> Vote for or write a review which offended gender or racial sensibilities: have on VERY rare occasions considered and voted for the former because they were just TOO brilliant, but have never voted for the latter -- not that I've found many.

> Vote for a film whose very title offended gender sensibilities: have FINALLY reversed my position on these in the hopes that a fwfr can be a 4-word protest, albeit witty. I'm still ambivalent about whether I'd vote in a similar way for film titles which offend racial sensibilities, viz another thread somewhere in the archives.

> Be included in a tribute accolade: have TOTALLY reversed my stance on this because my initial hesitation had to do with feeling too much like a stranger whereas now I feel like part of the fwfr family

> Vote for a fwfr just because it makes a sexual allusion: yep, still feel that way

> Vote for a fwfr which references an actor by the name s/he had in another movie -- ESPECIALLY when that other movie was made afterward: I just think that's lazy. But it's probably got a lot to do with the fact that actors really HATE it when they're only identified with one role as though they're expected to carry that character with them forever.

[Ooo, and I didn't want this to be a rant

Okay, I really DO want to find out YOUR 'fwfr nevers' and whether you've changed your mind.

Well, I'll try not to write or vote on a racist review, but that's about it.

I never ask anyone to vote on my reviews. I'd much rather feel that the votes I have were (probably) earned purely on the strength of the fwfr rather than because people felt they should probably vote on some of my stuff. (I realise my reviews in the Top 100, being somewhat more visible, are probably not a good example of this however)

P.S. This is not some kind of mind game to get everyone to rush over to my page and vote on reviews either.

P.P.S. And neither was that.

Ah, you are Beany-Bond with your never say never, eh?

My new avatar is an old photo of me, taken for a publicity shot in one of the UK newspapers, I forget which ... hence: once upon a time. Well, at my age one can mostly look at the look of yesteryear, sigh!

Actually, I did once have a rule to never review films about unicycling cucumbers, but I just couldn't keep to it.

I vow never to make up a whole list of rules for myself about what I am and am not allowed to vote for.

I vow never to care at all about whether or not someone will like my review or find it offensive when I consider whether or not to submit it.

I used to have this same stance and let my reviews speak for themselves. Then I saw how low I was in the review votes rankings so I took part in a couple of the Post a page of your zeros / 3rd Best etc and shot up in to the top 50.

I just took part in my first "For Your Consideration" and you know what, got 32 votes out of it. Now admitedly these were reviews that were some of my better ones and had almost no exposure so none of the other participants had probably seen them before. Still, if I'd taken part in the previous 280 FYC's, I could have got perhaps 4,000 to 5,000 votes. Being a vote-vamp pays.

As of today I won't be vote-vamping any more. That's until the next time.

Never vote on a review that doesn't deserve it.

That's the main reason I've stopped participating in general voting rampages. I got quite bored being presented with pages of 100 reviews where not one of the 100 deserved a vote. And having people visit my pages and cast votes on my 2003 boring reviews as they'd already voted on my better reviews.

Voting on boring reviews defeats the purpose of votes, as it elevates naff reviews above clever reviews from cleverer reviewers who don't participate in the fourum. I wish there was a vote-stripping mechanism so I could strip most of my 2003 reviews back to the 0 votes that they deserve. It's embarrassing to see some of these with 5-8 votes simply due to people voting with their finger instead of their mind.
