I agree that if it was supposed to be a joke then it's note particularly funny, but if the point was to raise awareness of the 'lack of donor' situation, then it may well have succeeded. Although it's been suggested that the purpose was to increase flagging ratings.
But if some good comes from the publicity (more donors) then it's all good in my view. Time will tell.

Time has told that the whole thing was a hoax to bring attention to the appalling lack of organs available for transplant. I hope you all carry donor cards and inform your next of kin of your wishes. Why wouldn't you want to help save someone's life after your own death at no cost or inconvenience to yourself?
This will now obviously come across as me being wise after the fact, but I really did think it might be a hoax and almost posted so, but then I thought that surely it would have been revealed if so. Good one the three genuinely in need of kidneys for taking part (not that I mean that everyone should want to do such a thing).
