The movie 'Underdog' is supposed to come out this year. IT is based on a cartoon show from way back when. I looked up Underdog to see what the deal is. The name Underdog has been passed on and on to diffewrent companies. I thought Warner Bros. has owned it. But I guess not. Now Disney will own part of the name. Disney is not what I think of when I think of Underdog. Why would Disney want to own a part of Underdog? I guess now Macy's cant use the Balloon in their Parade if now Disney owns part of it. I have seen the previews for Underdog. IT could have been made much better. THis is not a movie I dont think I will want to be seeing. I hardly say that about any Disney movie.

Blech and double belch.
I used to watch Underdog when I was a kid. Very cute. Never much cared for Alvin and the Chipmunks, so I doubt I'd be interested in seeing a full length film of that, especially if it is live action.
(How much helium will they need to do that movie, I wonder?)

| Underdog was never a Warner's property. It was one of the smaller independent cartoon studios, Total Television that produced it. They also produced King Leonardo and Tennessee Tuxedo. |

In defense of Alvin & The Chipmunks: okay, the 1980s revival is basically worthless, and I won't try to defend it. But there's much to be said for the 1950s & 1960s Chipmunks/David Seville records. The difference is the original David Seville (Ross Bagdasarian) who played all four parts on those records. His son, Ross Jr., took over the "David Seville" role in the late 1970s and 1980s.
The original Bagdasarian was quite a clever guy with a knack for odd and creative arrangments. As kids, my sister and I cherished the "David Seville" B-sides on the Chipmunk 45 RPM singles as much as or more than the "Chipmunk" A-sides. Bagdasarian managed to sneak a lot of oddball humor into obscure Chipmunk singles and album tracks, including "Japanese Banana," "Alvin for President," and a late-1960s remake of "The Chipmunk Song" in which the now-washed-up Chipmunks go into the studio only to be rudely greeted by the hippie blues band Canned Heat. Let me again praise the arrangements, especially on tracks like "Whistle While You Work," the Disney standard which Seville convincingly transforms into a Fats Domino-esque rocker. The original Chipmunk records were even sort of edgy for their time: David Seville got *really* angry on those records. He sounded like he might actually smack Alvin upside the head. Bagdasarian was into primal screaming way before John Lennon! One of the things I hated about the 1980s Chipmunks is that it turned David Seville into a pastel sweater-wearing wimp.
I hope I'm not going overboard praising the genius of David Seville. He made silly novelty songs, after all, and even the original Chipmunks TV show (The Alvin Show) was only mediocre. But I remain a fan of those original 1950s and 1960s recordings by Seville, both under his own name and as The Chipmunks. |

Naw, you go ahead and praise away. I have always thought the song "The Witchdoctor" was great. Doesn't age, does it? And it has been covered many, many times. |

David Seville, aka Ross Bagdasarian, was the guy composing at a piano in the same apartment complex as killer Raymond Burr in Hitchcock's "Rear Window". Alvin, Simon & Theodore were the names of other people on Seville's label and "Simon"s son, Lenny Waronker "was a well known record producer for Warner Bros. Records. He produced recording sessions for The Everly Brothers, Van Dyke Parks, The Beau Brummels, Harpers Bizarre, Randy Newman and Gordon Lightfoot to mention a few. Also known as an excellent A&R rep, he was responsible for building much of the Reprise Records roster in the 60s and 70s including Little Feat, the Doobie Brothers, Curtis Mayfield, R.E.M., Rufus Wainwright, Elliott Smith, Nelly Furtado and others."
So there's a connection between "The Chipmunk Song" and "I'm Like a Bird". |

| I really have to wonder how much interest there is in a long-forgotten cartoon show made in an era when kids were still entertained by the fact that the lead character talked in rhyme. |
