Hiya - in case anyone's interested

Pleased to say the Morning Star is running a [slightly shorter] version of my Die Hard 4.0 review in the new issue, out today on news stands, and online here

I've also been told they've taken my piece on Action Heroes, which is a tie-in to the Die Hard release and will appear in Wednesday's issue.

I'm currently working on a tie-in piece for Harry Potter and Firehouse Dog on children's role models. Will let you know if/when they take it.

Hope you like 'em!

Great review, BaftaBabe. I was hoping that all the reviews here would be from a Socialist standpoint, but the others just seem to be regular movie reviews. But there are articles ("The Politics of Fear") which put recent movies into a political perspective.

Anyway, nice job on getting your review in print and hope to see more in the future!

Thanks for the kind words, Joe. Actually, the Culture Ed has already said I can do more reviews, but there's a slight hitch. In the years since I've been out of London the people who run the press screenings have stopped ALL SCREENINGS in the South East of England. I had a long chat with the guy who runs it and he said the two reasons are: 1. they don't want to spend the money of extra prints, and 2. they're scared of piracy. The latter can only mean they don't trust the exhibitors or their projectionists not to make copies of the stuff. Don't even say it ... I'm still fuming.

The effect for me means unless I pay to travel to London every day I've got to find a way to see the stuff locally and still in time to write up my review and make the paper's deadline. My local cinema manager is truly wonderful and has put on a few special screenings for me, but even he can't be sure they'll get their prints the night before the stuff goes 'live.' So it's suck it and see every time.

That's why I came up with the tie-in idea. So, I will do more reviews, but more likely I'll be doing far more mini-essays.

As to socialist reviews -- well, Jeff Sawtell the senior MStar critic is fairly good about making the right social comment. The most important thing, imho, is to balance effectiveness of the film in its own terms and how it delivers what it sets out to do, without pretense or deceit.

Anyway - there's no hard or even well-defined socialist line ... just a nod to social relevance. Or summat!!

Rest assured, I'll keep you posted.
