News of Reggie the alligator is international. For those who are unfamiliar, some bozo, ex-cop originally keep a pet alligator (illegally) in the Southern California area (near Long Beach, CA). Because the alligator was growing too large, he took the reptile to a local lake and let him free.
The alligator, nicknamed "Reggie", for reasons I'm not aware of, was sighted numerous times but eluded capture for just about TWO YEARS, in spite of the strategems of numerous professional reptile hunters and handlers. Reggie became an icon among the locals for his tenacity and his ability to remain free.
Eventually, Reggie was captured (lured by some raw chicken, which he finally decided to eat, though previous free fowl feasts went wisely ignored). Humanely, Reggie was brought to the Los Angeles Zoo, where he was given his own enclosure.
Last night, months after being relocated to the Zoo, Reggie escaped! Unfortunately (for Reggie), Zoo personnel noted that he was missing from his enclosure early in the morning, and a massive early morning hunt led them to a craftily hiding Reggie, who was waiting under some brush by a loading dock that was due to open in minutes. It appears that Reggie defied all expectations and climbed over the chain-link fence in his enclosure (possibly by leveraging himself with his tail against a nearby wall), though alligator are not known to be climbers at all (due to their short legs).
Drat! Foiled again!
This is a reptile that's gotta be free! Soon, I expect him to be donning disguises and calling for a taxi late at night, or a helicopter, to effect his next, and inevitable, escape. Full story link below. Reggie is a testiment to free-spirited beings across the animal kingdom.
