My gut tells me this is some sick telephonic version of a Nigerian 419 scam, if Titanpa's positive that there's no way this info could legitimately back up to him.

i dont think he is dead. Everything I read still has him as alive

He apparently was alive and well in November of last year. He appeared at the Los Angeles Regional Science Fantasy convention. Some people do stay alive for a while!

Stop being such a skeptic, all of you!

TP, just believe him, call him back, and if you get a phone machine, be sure to leave your bank account number, mother's maiden name, your birthdate, and your social security number. This way you can ask him these things as sort of a test if he calls back -- you know, to make sure it's really him. (I know, I know: I'm brilliant.)

Unless you're willing to do the above, just call the guy and find out. Nobody said you had to give him money, or information.

Could one of Philip Klass's other pseudonyms be Emmanual Thoya?

Not once in the message was money mentioned. I'm just going to take it at face value and we will see what happens.

Scammers usually aren't dumb enough to ask for money and personal details until they have you a little more 'involved'

I hope you do call - cos I would like to know the scoop. Just don't give him any details he doesn't already have, and check the area code you are dialling before you do.

If he wants money, tell him to deposit $2.5mil into your account to free up your $40mil, that way you can help him.

Also I need to correct something that I said earlier. I said that after I looked up the number it took me to ask if I wanted more info about Phil. Actually the phone number was under his wife's name. FURMA. Which then took me to the wikipedia entry. If I do call I will use a calling card number. I will be careful. I think this is a bit shady. Of course I will let you all know what becomes of this. Thanx for your valued interest in this.

I was curious so I visited White Pages for Pennsylvania and Phil and Furma Klass are listed together. It gives their address, phone number, and rather shockingly, their age group!

I think it's Fruma Klass and there's some more info about these dratted Klasses --

I was going to give you the url, but it's only available via cache and that doesn't seem to reproduce properly here. So if you want to read The Post Gazette piece, Google "Fruma Klass", find the Post Gazette piece and click 'Cache.'

... the article does contain a typo 'Furma' -- oh, and look out for the scientology connection -- hey, maybe Tom Cruise gave Klass Titanpa's number

Ok. So for all you pessimistic people. I give you the rest of the story.

I called around noon today. It rang and rang. No answer no message machine. I thought "Geeze for people who want my money they sure arn't answering the phone." So I waited a bit longer.

I tried again around 2. Maybe someone was out for lunch. So it rang and rang. "Hello" in a woman's voice, came out from the other end (Possibly Furma). No Agency, No group, No Institute, No being recorded.

"May I please speak to Phil?" I asked.

"He's not in." She replied. "May I ask who this is?"

I thought quickly. "Phil was on my answering machine the other night. I don't know who he is or what it's about, but it sounded important."

"Who is this?" she asked inquizitivly.

"Brandon Smith(Name changed to protect the innocent)." I said.

"Is this Brandon?"

"Yes."

"YOu don't know the Klass's?"

"No."

"YOu don't know Adina?" (THere is that name again!!! What is it with this girl?)

"No I don't"

"Is your name Brandon Smit?(Last name changed minus 1 letter to protect the innocent)

"No. It's Brandon Smith."

"Oh Im sorry for the confusion. We must have got the wrong number. We lost Brandon's number and we looked it up and got this number. We are so very sorry for the inconvience. Thank you and good-bye."

I got this far I didnt want to hang up and not dig deeper. I had to do something. I needed to know if this was the famous Philip Klass!!!

"Wait wait wait!" I cried out. "I would like to know something!"

The line was silent.

"Hello?" I asked?

"Yes?" she replied.

"Not knowing who you are and not recognizing the number I looked up your names and I found out Phil is a famous writer. Is this true?

"Yes."

"Wow. Thats cool"

That was it. I could not think of anything further to say. Iwish he would have been there to answer so I could have talked to him more. I could have had the favor for Bafta granted. hehe. No but really. I felt stupid after crying out for her to stay on the line.

"Ok....thank you." I said

"Bye-bye." she quickly said.

"Bye."

So thats it. I have a famous person on my answering machine and nothing else to show for it. Maybe I should have asked for an autograph. This is the weirdest, coolest, exciting, and non eventful thing that has ever happened to me. I told my wife I want to keep the message on my answering machine. The thought I was crazy. He's a famous person that I'm ever going to get that close to. Maybe he will call back himself to apologize. I really need to find something about Adina.

Oh and by the way. I looked up Brandon Smit (last name changed to protect the innocent) There is an Actor with almost the same name as me and is 2 years younger than me. Weird...huh?

Well thats it. All you people that are so pessimistic. This really showed you. Take what you hear at face value. For those of you who would have heard it, erased it, and forgot about it...I would never have an Ice breaker conversation.
