You beat me to it, GHcool! I just listened to this on internet video. I had an inkling, but I wonder what's the purpose of this announcement?

I think she's just making a political statement. I think the fact that it got global coverage was her purpose for mentioning it, i.e., raising the issue.

Now that I think about it, I don't recall Obi-Wan ever having any strong feelings for women. He did have strong feelings for Anakin though. Hmmmm ...

Now that the series is over and done, I think Rowling is going to just keep throwing shit out there every once in a while to keep the mythology going. Coming up: Mr. and Mrs. Weasley are brother and sister; Neville is a vampire; and Hermione? More like Hermaphrodione.

Too be completely honest, I see this as Rowling just trying to have a little fun with the religious fundamentalists that get upset about her books because they think a children's book about sorcery is the work of the devil. If she's trying to get under their skin and give them something else to throw a tantrum about, this should do it.

Absolutely

I think she's just deliberately winding up anyone who's likely to be upset by this sort of thing - having a bit of fun and hey, the publicity doesn't hurt sales, so what the heck.

Its possible, but Rowling doesn't strike me as an Ann Coulter/Michael Moore type that goes out looking to create controversy. I think she's trying to pose a question. The audience gasped when they heard Dumbledore's orientation. Why? Does it really make a difference what a fictional wizard in a sword and sorcery novel thinks about in the "off stage" parts of the diagesis?

It will be interesting to see if they make him in the movies more flamboyant.

I'm not sure how much more flamboyant Dumbledore can be without it being a parody of itself.

When you think about it though, it makes perfect sense. She said he was gay and was smitten with Grindlewald. In the final book, she says that people were begging Dumbledore to travel to Europe to battle Grindlewald, to stop the terrible atrocities he was committing. He kept putting it off, obviously with the hope that Grindlewald would see the error of his ways. Rowling also says that he was 'disappointed'. So really, it makes sense. Only reason she just said it was someone only just asked her, I reckon.
