One pad at a time.

Okay, I've heard everything now. Tonight, I saw a new ad on TV that outlines how horrible conditions are in sub-Saharan Africa. You know the type - Sally Struthers or some other celebrity will show you sad photos of hungry children, sick children, homeless children, children with no clothing. It's heart wrenching.

The ad I saw tonight was sponsored by Tampax and Always feminine sanitary products. It showed African girls in white blouses and skirts. The narrator said "Can you believe that there are girls in Africa who can't attend school up to four days a month because they don't have sanitary supplies? Tampax and Always announce the Protecting Futures program to supply African girls the needed supplies to ensure they can attend school." Excuse me?? Where was Tampax and Always when I ran out of MY sanitary supplies at school and didn't have the $.25 to buy new supplies from the vending machine? Whatever happened to the old "wad up some toilet paper and stuff it" in an emergency? I'm relatively certain that my grandma didn't have that luxury either, back at the turn of the century when she was trudging off to school through 8 feet of snow with only scraps of her old petticoat.

Now don't get me wrong. I certainly do want those poor African girls to go to school. And I do want them to be sanitary and clean. I'm not insensitive to some of the prevalent health issues in some areas of the world. But puh-LEEZE!!! Wouldn't it be more cost-effective for Tampax and Always just to give those poor girls what they need instead of spending millions of dollars to tell us all how magnanimous they are? And I'll just bet those named millions of dollars could give even MORE gladrags to those needy girls. Just saying.

Reminds me of the time there was a special offer board in the local supermarket:

"TAMPAX SPECIAL - Buy 1 get 1 Free!"

And below it, in small letters "For a limited period only".

I would have thought that an ad like that would actually cramp their style.

What about the archeologist who discovered a packet of Tampax at a dig? He could not work out what period it was from.

C'mon, tampax are being generous. No need to rag on them.

... although, I'm sure that could be phrased better.
