I've been getting myself into some hot water on other forums recently.

When people said stupid things, I didn't just leave it lying there, I picked it up and ran with it.

I deliberately yanked chains just to watch the reaction.

I played with people the way a cat plays with a mouse.

You guys have spoiled me. Because of your sophistication with language, you know how to READ and UNDERSTAND posts.

I never said anything MEAN yet people interpreted my posts as mean, because people, being people (and especially, women being women) don't actually COMPREHEND what has been said, they just hang a whole bunch of their own emotional BS on it.

One of my good friends emailed me privately and asked me what has gotten into me.

I didn't know what to say, other than to admit that yes, I've been feeling very onery lately. She asked if I've been taking my medication. Well, as a matter of fact, I did get out of the habit of taking my prozac everyday. It seems, as a result, my patience with fools has run out.

So, it looks like I'll have to go back to medicating myself in order to make my behavior socially acceptable again.

But damn, I sure did have fun. Perhaps it was wrong...but it was fun.

I guess I must be a stand-out non-prozac taker.

That's called trolling!

Actually, it can be a lot of fun watching trolling in action. I hang around other forums (e.g., forums for discussing music, I go there to find more), and periodically organised trolling assaults are launched on other forums. E.g., someone spots a group on Facebook entitled something like "Hip-hop roolz, metal sux" or something, a metalhead finds it, posts the link to it, and the other group is attacked relentlessly. It sounds evil but is actually hilarious to read the attack and the defense. Generally those who react in a laid-back manner to the attack are respected, but those who take the attack personally become the subject of an even more relentless assault. I've come to realise that there are many different methods of trolling, and the cleverest trolls change their approach based on the reaction they receive. The best trolls don't even look like trolls, they slowly get under other people's skin.

On some forums it's good to get to know people (like fwfr), but on other places on the web it's a good idea to keep one's distance.

It, or similar mood-altering drugs, are pretty common now, aren't they?

When my mood is where it is now, I think it is kind of a shame to have to drug myself just so other people can find me likeable. But as the depression deepens and my thoughts become more morbid, I am grateful for the medication that allows me to me the person I choose to be.

Now, why would a nice girl like me do something like that?

YES! YES! YES!

My recent experience as a reluctant troll has taught me a lot about human nature.

1. "People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it."
2. People are VERY VERY VERY easy to manipulate!
3. People engage their emotions before engaging their brains.

I promise to use this knowlege for Good only.

Well, I think they are probably less common here in the UK than in the US, and certainly people are less likely to admit openly that they take them as they would imply "mental illness" to most people here.

I used to be on a few newsgroups where, in the beginning, the level of the intelligence was pretty high (yes, I know, I lowered the average. Shut up, nobody asked you) and I could add my comments without needing smilies for people to understand what I was truly trying to say.

Then some trolls came, and I decided to react as I would any other poster. It not only drove them up the wall, but they didn't get my humour and thought I was bating them back. I just laughed. But that's also when I realized the true worth of those smilies thingies. I still refuse to use them myself, but I have to admit, they can get you out of some uncomfortable spots - if used properly. When you are feeling like you are saying something just for effect, use one that works for you and you'll see how different the reactions are. Worth the try, isn't it?

By the way, you are the okay kind of troll - one who just got into a mood, and not one with any malice aforthought. The latter can get really mean and nasty, especially if people don't take their bait.

(I used to drive those latter kinds of trolls crazy when I laughed them off.)

I wish more folks would figure out that the best way to 'win' an argument with the bad troll is to put them on channel ignore.

My mild trolling moods have passed. For now.

Problem is, so few trolls do it with any finesse or art.
