| Which actor do you think has the greatest range? Who of all time and who today? |

Well, Geena Davis competed in the Olympics at archery so she must've got pretty good range... oh dear
(Hey... if it wasn't me, it'd be Whipper doing this!) |

| She wasn't quite that good. She came last in the Olympic trials. |

Well, that's still good enough for an extremely lame pun
Anyway... back on with the issue at hand. I'd suggest some folks, but they all seem to be extremely obvious character actor types- you know... William H Macy, et al... |

| The person who comes to my mind now is Johnny Depp. He first was on TV. He then was in romantic comedies. He also played some dark characters. And now he sings!! What is there left for him to do??? |

Today; I think Brad Pitt would have to be a contender
From eye candy in Joe Black, to trailer trash Kalifornia, nutter in 12 Monkeys, straight cop in Seven, anarchist in Fight Club, buffed up historic epic Troy and the elegeic Jesse James.
Johnny Depp could give him a serious run for his money though.
I'll have to think about the all-timer |

I'd have to agree with Depp and Pitt for today, and if including actresses then I'd nominate Cate Blanchett.
Of all time? Lemme think about this a bit longer.. |

How about Christian Bale?
And I reckon Leonardo Di Caprio could be a possible if he did a few more roles. |

| I don't know who the greatest of all time is and all of that, but my favorite performance in recent years was Ellen Page's in Juno. I hope to see her in more films. I'm also very impressed by the work of Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don't Cry, and Insomnia. |

| Don Cheadle's done it all really. From a funny, yet tragic cop in 'Traffic'. To an all out psycho in 'The Devil Wears A Blue Dress'. An overlooked talent if ever there was one. |

Today it must be Johnny Depp in the male slot and Charlize Theron in the women's.
As for all time... while this might seem like a cliche, I'd probably go with Spencer Tracey for the men and Katharine Hepburn for the women. Both did amazing dramatic and comedic parts with equal ability. If that doesn't do it, try Lauren Bacall for the women and maybe Cary Grant for the men.

Yep, this is whom I had in mind when I started this thread (having just seen I'm Not There and seen Rescue Dawn not long ago). |

| For actresses, I'm tempted to agree with Hilary Swank, although I haven't yet seen many of her films. |

I can't agree. She hasn't proved herself in comedy, only in drama. Theron was hysterical in her cameo on "Arrested Development", and has even been in a musical comedy (That Thing You Do). Not many acctresses can claim having been in such varying roles and films. Maybe the only other one I can think of is Meryll Streep, despite my disliking her in her dramatic roles. The other person who is also showing a far more wide range than Swank is Nicole Kidman, with Reece Witherspoon coming in close behind her.

Agreed, but his roles haven't been as vastly varied as Depp's have been. |
