Hey Gang! Statistics show that in 2006, I had 1,448 reviews approved by MERPs . . . and I joined in May or so, so those were all done in about 6 months! In contrast, I submitted reviews all throughout 2007, and I have a grand total of 244 reviews approved.
Was everyone else's 2007 a "slow" year, or does it vary from person to person? |

My first year also saw a larger number of reviews than my second, but that's partially because I wanted to push in my first year to achieve my various goals, but mostly due to "new love" enthusiasm. In 2007 we saw the inception of the submission cap and I'm sure that this had something to do with the lower number for that year.
(But I'm still in love.)

Hi RedPen [and it's been great seeing you back here on da boards!]
But I'm not sure these are are happy questions to pursue. I know we all like to measure whatever we might consider progress, but this site is about so much more than that.
I don't really want to curtail your freedom to ask whatever you want to, so please don't think that.
But it might be a good opportunity to rehearse the stuff we all should know by now.
First of all, it's benj who's Head of the MERPs and who's been a very busy boy for over a year - what with the wooing and winning and marrying of Mrs Benj, the extended global honeymoon. Not to mention changing jobs. The fact that he didn't close the site down amazes me!
Secondly, while it's always a smiley thing to see one's pending pile [or, in your case, one's RedPending Pile] reduce to qualify for WeightWatchers Slimmer of the Year -- there's nothing to beat the inner glow of knowing that the bigger that pile becomes, the more potential one has of acquiring lots of accolades and shooting up the rankings.
Thirdly, it's not as though anyone's picking on you. We either all trudge through the times when MERPs and especially benj just aren't so available to devote to us ... FOR NO PAY ... IN THEIR OWN FREE TIME -- or we're all visited by the vote fairy.
Do you really want to know why "he's got a bigger piece of pie than I do" or "why did she get the doll with the blue eyes?"
I know - you're going to say you were just asking out of idle curiosity.
So - out of idle curiosity - how many films have you added to the site? how many accolades have you made? won? how many times have you spotted some newbie talent and promoted them on the boards?
No, I'm not getting at you, just trying to shift the focus from approvals. In the end, isn't the fwfr community far more important than how many of this or that you can get?
Rantlet over -- going now for that vital cuppa coffee.

Thanks, Baf, for all the input. PLEASE NOTE, everyone, that I don't mean this as a complaint of ANY kind! I was just wondering if '07 had been slow for everyone (i.e. overworked MERPs, changes in rules, etc.). That's all. Promise!
Thanks again, Babe! |

| I'm pretty sure that approvals within a whole year are almost entirely determined by submissions within a whole year (albeit a couple of months earlier). The time lag is not increasing, so MERPs are not working more slowly. |

You wrote 1448 reviews in 2006 that were approvable, and 244 in 2007 (in addition to any you still have pending). So your submission rate dropped dramatically. So it's a slow year for you, not for MERPs, as MERPs obviously don't have anything to do with how fast you submit reviews.
The submission cap of 20/week means nobody can submit more than 1040/year, so you used up a lot less than your allocation. I only had 142 approved in 2007, as that's how many approvable reviews I wrote. |

I think what I learned during this year was how much of the editing is done by Benj.
During his World Tour approvals slowed to a trickle, which leads me to believe that he does by far the lions share of all editing, despite the constant references on the fourum to MERPs, as if they do all the work and Benj just supervises.
Therefore it's hardly surprising that a year where Benj had to prepare to get married, get married, go on a World Tour and then come back, get a new place to live, a new job and settle into married life might prove to be a difficult one for him to find time to go as much editing as he would have liked.
What I find amazing is Benj's constant dedication to the site even during such a busy time for him.

What Sean said - 2007 was a slower year for all of us reviewers than previous years - not only because we had that submission cap, but I'm sure it had a lot to do with it. As Whipper says, if you can't submit over 1040 per year at this point, and you had over that number 1100 accepted in the previous year/s, then the cap is the reason why 2007 seems slower for us.

... although, if we're going to be exact, the cap did not start till 25th February and so in fact the maximum number of submissions for 2007 was infinity. |

It's not very often that I can say this (about anyone), but I wholeheartedly agree with Whippers sentiments on Benjs commitment and dedication.
I do however disagree slightly on the MERPs, I think they do more than we possibly know about.
Cheers

| We tend to look at stats and numbers and rankings. I've learned that on this site you should expect too much. THe fun is in the making of reviews, friends, and conversation. Sure it might have been a slow year, but only because Benj had such an eventful year. So try not to complain, everyone is doing the best they can. Benj included. |

I think Red Pen is merely asking a question, and for some reason, everyone is interpreting it as an veiled attack on the MERPS.
I had 2071 approvals in 2006 and 875 in 2007. I'd probably would have had 2000 in 2007 if it wasn't for the cap.
(I'm not complaining -- I said this before I don't mind the cap because it makes life easier for Benj and the MERPs.) |

People are not attacking or taking it as an attack, most are just explaining why it's not a slow MERP year.
