I just now learned that Rufus Sewell played the role of Martin Luther in the stage play.
I have been unable to find a dvd of it and don't even know if such is available.
Brits--will you check into that for me, pleeeeeeeze?
I am hoping someone will cast Sewell as Rochester in another Jane Eyre production. I would also like to see Sewell and Joaquin Phoenix cast as brothers sometime.
I saw the play Luther performed by my brother's best friend in the title role 35 or more years ago. It was done by a college theater group and it had surprising strength and maturity due to there being so many returned Vietnam Veterans in the cast. I would like to see the play again. |

Well, I don't know for sure that there's no DVD of the much heralded National Theatre revival, but I'd bet there isn't. Although Sewell himself garnered excellent reviews across the board, the production received a mixed-bag -- with some critics focusing on the weaknesses of the play itself.
Also, it isn't routine that any NT or even West End production will be recorded for posterity.
You're right about the resemblance between Sewell and Phoenix, though!
Hope this helps.

Another set of "twins separated at birth"?
I think Sewell is an amazing actor, but until Walk the Line I had my doubts about Phoenix, and even so, I'm not totally convinced yet.
If you like Sewell, you really should try to see the mini series "Charles II: The Power & the Passion" - he's fantastic in that. The first thing I remember seeing him in was Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence and I was rooting for his character Frank to get the girl throughout the film.
(I mean, really, couldn't she see that Tom Hollander's character is almost gay and Joseph Fiennes is a weesely wimp?) |
