This feels disturbingly symptomatic of the erosion of democracy.
Had I but dosh enough and time, I'd start some kind of campaign to flood the net - and the streets - with the dreaded word
Or, next to every Victoria's Secret boutique - a shop dedicated to the CULT STATUS of Hubbard's Cupboard.
Grrrrr

But you can still Marvell at the stupidity of this prosecution.
On the bright side, like the McLibel case, it can only serve to highlight the practices of a dubious corporation.

I'll have to agree with them Bafta
On behalf of cults everywhere I support their right not to be associated with Scientology. |

Why do I feel they only did it in hopes that Tom Cruise would come to the trial?

"Demonstrators from the anti-Scientology group, Anonymous, who were outside the church's 23m headquarters near St Paul's cathedral, were banned by police from describing Scientology as a cult by police because it was 'abusive and insulting'."
are they serious? i agree 100% with Ursula Owen, who said "being offended is an occupational hazard in a free society."
Anonymous probably would have been better off legally by following Penn & Teller's lead and just called them dumbasses. (clarification: i'm not calling Scientologists dumbasses, just pointing out that it may be more difficult to prosecute.) |

Being abusive and insulting in a public place, I gather. Or perhaps it was a demonstration that didn't have police sanction. I can understand the latter, but people should be allowed to express their opinions in public. Now, if the Scientologists decide to sue them for slander and/or defamation, that's another thing altogether. But that's civil, not criminal.

Okay, here's the thing. There are lots of people truly believe that Scientology is a religion. And there are also lots of people who say its a scam. These are simply opposing opinions and both sides have the right to express their views, and neither should be shut up by the other.
(That I recall reading somewhere that Hubbard was once quoted as saying something to the effect of "if you want to become rich, start your own religion", and then proceeded to do just that, makes me think its a scam. But that's just me.)

Just did a search on this and found this site: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/scientology/skeptic/start-a-religion-faq/
Interesting.
That still doesn't mean anyone should stop people from believing in Scientology. Of course, that also doesn't mean people should silence its detractors, either.

That's nothing. Ask me what I think about virgin birth!
(Of course, I also have my doubts about parting seas and burning bushes, but that's just natural.)

yes it should stop people from believing in Scientology. This and the fact L Ron Hubbard stole a couple hundred million from the church. The only people who believe in Scientology are those who let emotions rule their life, without using logic. What happened to the days where, instead of giving everyone an equal time to two sides talking about a subject, we just ignored the crazies? For instance, if I'm writing a science book, I don't spend half my time talking about how the world is round and half about the crazy minority who still believe it's flat.
If someone wants to believe a crazy superstition and worship a cult leader, that is by all means their right, but it shouldn't receive funding from the government. |
