| He was an icon of the industry that loved his craft. He will be missed. |

| I remember how gracious he was in an interview for John Carpenter's THE THING: "This is Rob Bottin's movie; he just got overwhelmed and brought us in to help. But it's Rob's show." |

Pumpkindead.
I'm so sad to hear this - Winston was one of the best, if not the best, in his field. His work on Terminator, Aliens and Predator were instrumental in getting me hooked on sci-fi and monster movies - his name was always a mark of quality where effects were concerned - even in lesser films his work stood out. A major loss. |

I was just sadly flipping through my copy of THE WINSTON EFFECT, the beautiful Titan coffee-table book on SWS done a couple years ago, and I had the same feeling as I did the first time I saw the book: if you only pay attention to movies, you can't appreciate all the other great stuff a pro fx house puts out in more commercial work: the Aflack [sp?] duck, for example. ILM, the same thing when you realize all they've done. Pixar too, for that matter. Will Vinton Studios was doing incredible Claymation long before they got the California Raisins gig, but I'll bet that's the Vinton effect seen by the most people.
Stan died far too young; there's a photo toward the end of him and his still-gorgeous wife of 30+ years. Aw, shit, God, why? Make that my Stan Winston fwfr. |

I have a copy of that great book too Randall. The work Winston did on the Alien Queen floors me every time. It's just so perfect.
By the way it's worth braving the hysterical fan-boy hyperbole of Ain't It Cool News to read the industry letters regarding his death - some lovely anecdotes from long serving members of his team and a few Hollywood heavy hitters like James Cameron and Frank Darabont. |

| How right you are. Generally I loathe that site, but anyone who is seriously mourning Stan Winston should check this out. |
