I know it's been plugged before, but the only reference i could find using search was to this locked topic here: http://www.fwfr.com/fourum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=437&SearchTerms=affinity
Filmaffinity
It's a pretty basic website, and doesn't do much, but what it does do it does well. I use it extensively to check out films I plan to see or to find films I should see, and I rely on the results it gives far more than I rely on imdb or fwfr film scores. the more films you rate, the more accurately it finds your 'soulmates' who have the same taste as you.
The concept, for those of you that don't know, is that you rate movies with a score between 1 and 10. After you have rated a minimum number (approx 20 I think), it runs some algorithms to find the 20 other reviewers whose taste in film most closely correlates to yours.
After that, you can either ask for the top rated films of those reviewers, or for any given film you are thinking of checking out you can see the film rating and vote distribution of the general population of the site, of the 20 'soulmates' whose results and taste most closely correlate to yours, and of your friends.
I find the results of my 'soulmates' uncannily accurate in predicting how well I will like an unseen movie, far more accurate than the general population score or t5he average imdb/fwfr score.
Anyway, as well as altruistic motives of showing you a good site, the selfish reason for the plug is that I also like seeing the scores my 'friends' have given for films I'm thinking of watching. I have noncentz, stalean and titanpa as as friends, and get to see their scores, but they all stopped rating films long ago.
So - anyone already rating films, let me know your username so i can add you to my list, anyone not on, get on!
My username, for anyone who wants to see my ratings, is martinm.
And yes, my 20 soulmates are all still spanish .... |

Hmm. Lots of Spaniards... that's fine though... I have a definite Continental European slant to my film tastes...
Thanks for the heads-up Bife. Another enormous waste of time in the making... |

I've got only 18 spaniards, with a finn and an argentine thrown in for variety.

| When I have time, I intend to translate all my scores here to the I.M.D.B., so perhaps I'll add them there at the same time since it's also out of 10. (It's a shame that the I.M.D.B. itself does not have it as a feature.) I'd be surprised if the results were as good as they seem to be for you, though, as various small details often make me like a film a lot more than otherwise. |

And I guess anybody who sees 300 films a year is probably not in any need of a mechanism to decide which film to see next!

| That's true -- I'm virtually not selective about those at all. I do need to catch up with classics but I guess I can trust the general consensus on the best of those. |

Haven't looked at the site in years. According to it, the "movie" that my soulmates most highly recommend for me to view is the TV mini-series "Band of Brothers". By a remarkable coincidence, I just got this from my nephew for Xmas!
I will have to be extra generous to him next year. |

I'm there as Rovark I recently worked through the Unrated Films function to get the last 30 odd films needed to reach a nice round 2800 films (+ TV series) rated to date. 1 Argentinian and 19 Spanish soulmates.
I'll be adding anyone here as friends, just to see how wrong you are about some of the films you've rated - It could start some interesting threads in the forums |
