Astronomers have documented a HUGE SCAR on the surface of Jupiter, caused by what appears to be an earth-sized comet. In this news story, credit for the find goes to Anthony Wesley, described as follows:This time, the object that hit the planet was not observed. The first announcement of a new scar on the planet's exterior came Sunday from amateur Australian astronomer Anthony Wesley. Where would we be without amateur Australians, let alone amateur Australians who are also astronomers.
HATS OFF TO AMATEUR AUSTRALIANS! Keep up the good work: eventually they will make it to professional Australian status, God and the Queen willing. |

That's incredible Rockfsh.
(Not so much that a comet hit Jupiter, but rather that a story which appeared in the Daily Mail turned out to be valid!)

What's incredible is that the Open played a role in this. |

I'm still in open-jawed awe at the size of the scar compared with the size of Jupiter. I can read stats for-fucking-ever. But to see something that's Earth-size next to Jupiter ... WOW that's one big mother of a planet!
Thanks for the link rockfsh

| This just serves to bolster all those scary "Earth is about to be hit by giant comet/meteor/another planet" films that skeptics say can't really happen. Do you suppose this means doom for the dinosaurs on Jupiter??? |

Earth will be hit by a comet. When is the question. Any dinosaurs on Jupiter were done in by the Shoemaker-Levy comet strike 15 years ago.

I thought by the title this thread was going to be about the second test at Lords.
[This is a cricket reference and therefore meaningless to anyone of a US disposition. Sorry.]
