I'm really not looking for sympathy or pity with this post. As everyone and their brother probably knows, I'm trying to get approved for Social Security Disability. SS has sent me to a "mental exam", the questions for which seemed to center around my panic attacks and phobias (apparently saying that I'm afraid I'll have a stroke and die and my cats run out of food and are forced to start eating my fingers and also being afraid I'll have a stroke and NOT die but be largely incapacitated, so I'm mostly afraid all of the time qualifies me as phobic - but really, wouldn't it anyone). SS sent me to a physical exam, which consisted of a stethoscope listening to me breathe and having me touch my toes and try to squat down (can't do that because of a tear in my right knee joint a few years ago), as well as questions about my high blood pressure and the kidney center visits. Then, as an afterthought, which was fine by me but came a month after the other exams, they sent me to an ophthalmologist, which targets the primary reason for applying. The doctor said "Do you know your right eye is bleeding right now?" Well..... NO, since I can't see anything with it. He then said "you're blind in your right eye and have 50/200 vision in your left eye and it can bleed at anytime. That would make you blind. You need more laser surgery right away." I told him that since I have no health care insurance and was denied Medicaid that I can't have it unless he wants to do it for free. No offer there, but he said "My report to Social Security will reflect this." I'm not entirely clear on what that means, but I think it is good for my claim. I hope so, I need a new television while I can still see it.

What a mess. I hope you get through this.

But you know, it is truly hard for me to believe that any advanced country today can't figure out how to set up a socialized medical system. It is bureaucratic crap like this that ends up making people totally disabled, and it is so easily avoidable. It just seems both heartless and financially shortsighted.

(Sorry. Lecture over.)

Good luck w.h.l. It sounds just awful, but at least like there might be some progress now. Fingers crossed. (And what C.L. said about American healthcare -- this is one area of "change" that really must happen this presidential term.)

Thanks everyone. Truly, the lack of socialized health care is a huge detriment here and yes, Chockie, my comment to Medicaid was that if I stroke out and am incapacitated then they HAVE to take care of me, now don't they? It's just that I don't want that to happen. Drug companies will provide free medication if one can afford to pay the $50-$75 to visit a doctor, but ever since I moved to this county, there is no county supported health clinic to go to, so no health care provider at county expense, which took care of my medication needs in the past. It SUCKS. I'm just trying to muster through until I'm approved. Good wishes are truly appreciated. Anyone got a nice sibling here in Indiana who would take on a pauper?
