<serious voice>

Dunno how many of you haven't yet heard about the UK woman who successfully campaigned to have a woman's face [other than the queen] on the money, after rumours that social reformer Elizabeth Fry was to be replaced by a man's face. In the event, about 4 days ago, the Bank of England, whose decision is it, has chosen Jane Austen. Now - guess what?

Caroline Criado Perez, the campaigning woman has ever since been the subject of the most vile, threatening, and disgusting tweets - extraordinarily graphic, including precisely what these twits will do to her, her family, her friends, their orifices, and even their lives. This is illegal. A world-wide reaction is now underway for Twitter to immediately install a "report" button --- much as amazon currently have --- partly because the police are saying they don't have the expertise [or the budget?] to investigate.
The Verge
Huffington Post

There's now a global move to declare 4 August as a tweet-free day.

Meanwhile - if you are as concerned about this reaction against Caroline as so many of us are, I would like to issue a polite challenge to every one of you with sons, daughters, fathers, uncles, brothers, friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, work colleagues, school and faith groups, FB friends, et al.

Will you be brave enough to actually start a discussion, instigate a discussion - NOT about what these twits are saying, but WHY this might be a reaction to a woman and her supporters in helping to achieve more gender equality. Will you?

Post here if you will, and when you did, and what the reaction was. TIA.

From the Verge:

Update: A 21-year-old Manchester man suspected of participating in the threats has been placed under arrest.

And Huffington:

UPDATE: Twitter has responded to the campaign in an email to Caroline Criado-Perez and Labour MP Stella Creasy.

In an email seen by HuffPost UK, Twitter's Steve Summers asked to have all the police reference numbers and specific tweets sent to him so the company could take action. He said that he would make sure both of the women were "connected to the right people for conversations to continue on Monday".

Creasy had asked for a meeting with Twitter, along with fellow MP Steve Rotherham "on how we ensure that Twitter is able to comply with the Protection From Harassment Act in Britain."

Furthermore, the change.org petition has nearly 100,000 signatures.

OK, thanks. But my post is about personal change, how do we significantly change culture. So ... as for my polite challenge?

Have you been brave enough?
