Since it's awards show time, and the Oscars are yet to come, I thought I'd start a thread.

Here are two Oscar Winners I don't think should have been honored. But, I'm sure there are loads more, so add your faves.

Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love
Angelina Jolie for Girl Interrupted

Is that your wife? I am completely in agreement with her. It sounds fake. And, I can't concentrate on performances when accents don't sound right.

But, I will probably see the movie eventually -- probably on DVD rental.

Really? I'm not loving his accent in that movie. I'm not from that country, so can't tell how real it is, but it sounds fake to me.

Letters From Iwo Jima
Here's a thing I've been wondering about this film - assuming that Clint Eastwood cannot speak good Japanese, how did he direct it? He must have had some sort of assistance, surely? If so, does he really deserve the Oscar nomination? I am sure that he did the bulk of the work and admirably so, but surely he cannot have had much to do with the delivery of people's speech other than in the most general sense.
I can't answer that question specifically, but direction of actors who don't speak the director's language is not uncommon. Sergio Leone in his Westerns wasn't exactly proficient in English. Lucas Moodysson couldn't speak Russian when he directed Lilya 4-ever. Takashi Shimizu couldn't speak English when he directed The Grudge. Those are just a few that spring to mind. Usually directors have assistants, and if necessary a translator to pass instructions. Sure, the principal director won't have absolute control of nuances in dialogue if they don't speak the language, but such nuances are usually only a small part of an overall scene.

Saw Letters From Iwo Jima last night. It was really good.

But, I think The Departed will still get my betting vote for Best Picture. And now I HAVE seen all the movies up for Best Picture before the Oscars, which is my goal each year.

I don't know. I thought he was pretty good in The Departed.
I also thought Leo did a good job and I don't usually like him. I haven't thought much of his acting since What's Eating Gilbert Grape, where I thought he was really good.

Absolutely correct. I was speaking of the guy visiting the grave and then finding out it is Tom Hank's grave. And the guy grows up from Matt Damon to the guy at the end/beginning. I would have taken those parts of the film and deposited them right in the trash can. It's a really moving film without that extra crap.

EM :)

Moving without it I agree. But I'm one of those people that the device worked for - because I DID think it was Tom and so was taken by surprise when he copped it.

Wow! You guys are a tough crowd. Can't you just go to a theatre and be entertained? I really liked The Departed. I thought it was well acted by many of its cast. And I enjoyed the story beginning to end. Martin winning for that would not be the worst mistake ever.

If not Departed for best pic., then what?

I've seen three of the other four and I can't say any of those are complete standouts and deserve to win.

I have not seen Letters yet. I will do that before next Sunday.

EM :)

i said "Departed" was very good. and i was certainly entertained. it's just not nearly the best we've seen from Scorcese. i think academy voters may vote for him just because it's about time he won. almost like a special achievement award.
it was about time a loooong time ago. f-ing Three 6 Mafia and Eminem have Oscars and Marty doesn't?!
the only other best picture/best director nominee i've seen is "The Queen." i think "The Queen" had better directing but i think it's pretty close as to which film was better overall.
best supporting actor nominee Marky Mark (i hear he hates that name now) seemed like he was still playing Dirk Diggler, playing Brock Landers.

You're right, that is a strength of Little Miss. And, I can't remember laughing so hard as I did towards the end of that movie. You know the scene. Hilarious.

Yes, its main strength is Mirren's performance, although the writer(s) also did a very good job in terms of capturing the Queen's and Tony Blair's, amongst others, styles of speech. The Departed may have a broader range of strengths, but my overall enjoyment of The Queen was still higher.

And Little Miss Sunshine was very cute, but it's not the kind of movie I think of as Best Picture.

I'm not really thinking in any wider sense that the film I liked the most. My viewpoint is that all aspects of film feed into this; they do not need to be weighed up consciously. I was nevertheless consciously impressed by the set of inter-relationships in this film. I don't find that many films have so many characters between each pair of which the dynamic is realistic and also interesting.

I completely agree except that I think it was only good, not very good. I found The Queen better and Little Miss Sunshine much better. Babel was about the same, or perhaps a bit worse. I also found The Last King of Scotland to certainly be better than either Babel or The Departed, so on that basis alone I would not want either of those to win.

Have not seen Last King of Scotland yet, so can't speak on that. I thought The Queen was well done and Helen Miren certainly is great, but I don't think it should even be up for best picture. It's just a really good performance. And Little Miss Sunshine was very cute, but it's not the kind of movie I think of as Best Picture. I think right now, until I see Letters, I have to go with The Departed for a movie I think would fit what I think of as a Best Picture type of movie.

The movie, however . . .
I guess what bothered me the most was the horrible love story that was tacked onto the story of the Titanic going down. I guess that's Hollywood. But I feel it certainly didn't need it. And I would have appreciated the retelling of that horrific night much more without it.

Yep - sounds like lots of people felt the same.

To me, it's like the beginning and ending on Saving Private Ryan. It's not needed. And the addition of it is insulting to my intelligence.

Funny, the beginning and ending of Saving Private Ryan were the only parts that I did like. All the stuff in the middle... well... been there, done there. Thousands of WWII movies told it far better than SPR and if you've seen one...

Of course, the best WWII movie isn't a movie at all - its a mini-series. "Band of Brothers". Amazing!

I think Em may have been referring to the wraparound story in the graveyard, not the battle scenes. If so, I agree with her.
