Yeah, they're just not 'metal' enough to be 'metal'. They call themselves 'rock 'n' roll', Wiki calls them 'hard rock' so there you have it. The line has to be drawn somewhere, and if they were 'let in' then you'd also have to let in Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zep etc. It's "Metal Archives", not "Metal and Hard Rock Archives".
There are a few ways that a hard rock band could get an entry, one way is if prominent band member(s) have associated acts that are clearly metal, e.g., "Hardingrock" are a Norwegian folk/rock outfit who are definitely not 'metal' but one of their principals is a major member of various Norwegian black metal bands, so they get an entry. This doesn't apply to AC/DC. Another way is if a rock band has at least one release that's clearly metal then they get an entry.
AC/DC generally conform to the 'verse/chorus/verse' structure and 4:4 time that's intrinsically associated with pop/rock'n'roll etc, and all they've done is crank up the distortion level. That's not enough to make them metal. In a nutshell:-
Rock = pop + heavy guitars
Metal = classical + heavy guitars
but obviously it's a lot more complicated, e.g. folk metal.  |

I hear you, but I might have expected Saxon, Scorpions and Maiden to be classed in whatever category AC/DC found themselves in

There was a day when Led Zep were considered 'metal' too, but I know few people these days who'd think so. There's sometimes a fine line between rock and metal, and some end up on the 'rock' side of the line. The presence of heavy guitars generally isn't enough to class music as 'metal', structurally it needs to deviate far enough from the classic 'pop' structure that a pop/rock classification couldn't apply.
Yeah, people argue about this a lot. |

Somehow ac/dc don't seem to be listed. They may have become mainstream, but they were as much a metal band as any of the others above  And they were by far the best live band I've seen (they played on the same line-up as Metallica, and outclassed them. Granted that they headlined, so had all the advantages, but I was a mad Metallica fan) |

Yeah, I was just surprised it wasn't done a couple of years ago, it's been a household name (I think?) for a while now. But if it's never been in the running (due to no nomination) until now, then it's a most worthy contender (for best lolcat site at the very least  ).

re: lolcats - as I said it was already nominated by another judge -- we have to remember that the webbies is to raise the profile of worthy sites among those who don't already know about them, not among webnerds like us!!

The point of it is for ordinary people anywhere in the world to upload photos and videos of a quality that news media may want to use. Yep, you're on the money there. Lolcats reached a critical mass a little while ago: one is always hearing about them everywhere e.g. in the free papers (which are not exactly boundary-pushing). |

I second the icanhascheezburger nomination, but that site is so well known and been around long enough that wouldn't it's time have been a year or two ago? If it hasn't already been nominated then I don't know why not... |
